Hi,

I have been looking at this car as I would like a Mk3.

https://www.carsales.com.au/private/det ... 6684/?Cr=1

Have spoken to the owner who suggested it is 1976 mini which the previous owner put disc brakes on. It has an 1100 motor and twin stalk indicators which could suggest it might be an early Mk4. However it also looks very Rover and some of the SA Mini guys suggest it might well be. Thoughts?

There has been some other comments on rego and year models on this forum, but my question is if it is registered as a 1974 or 1976 it qualifies as a club car. However if the club inspects it and it is actually a 1989 Rover how does this affect historic rego? From a rego perspective it qualifies and for some reason it has been registered and recorded as such. Is the registered year model the determining factor or can the club over ride that and not accept it? Just a general question not a specific one if it would not qualify I would not buy it.

thanks

In NSW (and the ACT) the Club Registrar is required to sign the form that certifies that the vehicle is eligeable for Club plates.

So, you need to determine if the rules are the same in SA and, if so, then ask the person responsible to confirm that they would accept this particular car (in writing??). Anything else is hearsay..... and a recipe for potential disaster..

Cheers, Ian

In the UK the only roundnose fitted with an 1100 engine was the "1100 special". So if it has an 1100 it wouldn't be factory.

Looking at the below info from minispares, that car has separate reverse lights, twin stalks, which would indicate a late Mk4 or later. If you can find out if the subframe is a single or twin bolt one that might help too. Of course, anything on it could have been swapped in the past 30 years, so you'd need some better identification like the build plate etc. The wheels and badge on the front would suggest a Rover?

Quote:
Mk3 introduced in November 1969 had wind up windows with internal door hinges except van and pickups. The boot lid lost the original hinged number plate and its recess shape and a large rear colour coded lamp was fitted in its place. Larger rear side windows.

Mk4 introduced in 1976 had a front rubber mounted subframe with single tower bolts and the rear frame had some larger bushes introduced. Twin stalk indicators were introduced with larger foot pedals. From 1977 on the rear indicator lamps had the reverse lights incorporated in them.

Edit:
Also the side repeater lights look to be post 1986

Everything about it looks Rover to me.

That said, if you like it, buy it. Whether or not one can get conditional rego seems like a flawed way to make a buying decision? The differential in annual cost isn't that great to justify missing out on a car that you like.

Thanks Davo true enough point but I already have one weekend car a 1993 Escort that does not qualify for historic rego so the $600 a year savings for another weekender does make a big difference. It also allows me to justify spending more money on the initial purchase as the running costs will be lower ;)

I would only be concerned if it is a imported rover and was never complied, that they did a dodgy and called it a 76 so they could falsely register it without Australian compliancing.

It's regoed as Leyland so that should tie it to certain years. Although to dmt could have called it a Leyland back then because they couldn't find a rover mini in their system. It's OK for them to call it whatever they like but if you did it they'd nail you to the wall.

The records kept in the UK seem to be a lot better than ours here... I think your best bet would be to get the body number and maybe post on "The Mini Forum" UK to see if you can track down some help. Possibly the Heritage Motor Centre UK might be able to help too.

if you find out its VIN number that will tell you everything that you need to know ..

But with the side repeaters in the mud guards , the front seats , a shot of the motor or engine number will confirm the capacity ... looks like a rover to me

I have posted on the mini forum. Side indicators from 1984 but the big issue is the lack of rain gutters so the roof is the biggest indicator of being a rover. With lack of heritage re shells here it is highly unlikely somebody has gone to the trouble of changing all these things to look like a rover. Thanks for the comments

I'd think it's advertised as a 1976 Leyland as carsales wouldn't have the correct selection for an imported mini
