Well, I have me an old 850 engine that apparneltt was running when it was pulled outm which it seems fine. I'm just trying to start it on the garage floor, but I'm not getting any spark. I've got my jumper leads with postive on solenoid, negative on block. Got a lead from solenoid going to the positive on the coil. Then I've got my dissy leads all going to my plugs, and the single lead to the coil. When trying to crank to the engine, I'm not getting a spark. Can't seem to work out whats wrong. Any ideas? |

Have you taken out a plug to see whether there it sparks? if no spark, work backwards from there, test your leads with a multimeter, check the dizzy, the coil etc..what do you know is for certain working? |

Well atm I've just been testing plugs 1 and 2, grounding them against the block. I dont' have another set of leads I can try because the dissy cap has the leads hardwired. I've tried 2 different coils but I don't know enough of this sort of engine work. How would one test the spark leads with multimeter? Just continuity test? |

You can do a resistance check on the leads, set it to Ohm...can't remember what the reading should be though..so i'm not much help there 
You can get new leads from Supercheap, good Bosch one's for about $5ea... I'd try an find another dizzy to test..and use it with some new leads.. |

Take the coil lead off at the dizzy end, turn your ignition on, then earth out your coil lead. It should spark continuously AND with a big spark. If not, your coil or the coil lead may be the problem. I did this test on a commodore last week.... the coil lead had a tiny spark when earthed out - meaning the coil had sh*t itself, so I replaced it with one from my mini parts bin... hey presto - BIG SPARK. Another commo saved with some mini parts

If the coil is creating a (quote) BIG SPARK.... then test your spark plug leads. If NONE of the spark leads are creating spark when earthed out, that narrows down the fault to being either the dizzy cap, the points inside the dizzy or the rotor button inside the dizzy. |

Well what leads will I need on my coil for this test to work? I've only got the positive lead from the solenoid to the +ve on coil. |
