I think I have read somewhere that you cant bolt an 1100 engine straight onto an 850 box without modifications. Is this correct ? |

I'm pretty sure my old motor (1098) was bolted to an 850 box (brass cone synchros - ouch!). I couldn't say for sure but I don't think mods are necessary, I thought that 1275 cranks, and 4 synchro boxes were the ones to be careful with. Anto. |

Yeah it fits on- turn it the motor over by hand without any gaskets on the box, if it catches anywhere take it off and grind the marks away. Sometimes on/near the centre web. Forget a 1275 on that box. I did it once successfully, but it took major surgery which included cutting 4 holes in the front to clear the conrods.. ![]() |

Ya could always just put a 998 crank shaft in if it does faul a little. Though by the sounds of it, you wont have any probs. |

Yeah if it touches it's only a burr or flash in the casting- hardly anything needs to come out for it to miss a 1098. <edit> ALL my comments in posts above assumed early 850 box- 22A363. If it's the later box 22G68 there is no problem- this was common to 850, 998, 1100, 997 & 998 Cooper. ![]() Anto, you can put ANY motor on a 4 synchro remote box, or any rodchange box. |
