hey i have plans to purchase new wheels for my 1973 leyland mini, ive come across a set of 13X7 SUPALIGHT rims http://www.minispares-online.co.uk/7x13-black-polished-rim-superlight-softline-deep-dish-alloy-wheel-only/?page_context=category&faceted_search=0

im curious as to what 13inch rims will will fit the mini as i am not the most knowledgeable of offset requirements..

any opinions/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Here is a good offset calculator to give you an idea on where the wheel will sit on the mounting surface.

http://www.wheel-size.com/calc/?wheel1= ... m&scl=50mm

This one you can put in completely custom values, punch in your current specs and the new specs then grab a ruler to see how far the new tyre will poke out.

http://www.willtheyfit.com/index.php?wi ... -7#content

This will give you some background info and a library of mini wheels.

http://www.wheeldictionary.net

Now here's the kicker, basically no 13" rim will fit a mini without cutting the front wings to prevent rubbing. Also later cars with 13" rims had limiters on the steering rack to prevent rubbing on the inner wing.

In regards to drums std drums sit further inboard than discs, so the offset for drums is usually less than for discs. However you can alleviate this by using stepped drums to take up some of the extra offset built into wheels for discs.

You will need arches too.

What's your current setup? Have a picture?

More reading. Also consider the bigger wheel has mass further away from the axis so disc brakes are something you will need to consider, you will gain much needed clearance for the inner wing too.

I did a quick calculation using the second link, the outer rim face wil move around 60mm further out from your current rims, also you will lose 45mm of guard clearance, this is why they need to be cut.

12" rims are a different thing though. Carefully selected 12" rims and tyres will get you very close to std 10" rolling diameter and offset.

Something like this is far easier to fit, no cutting of wings provided your suspension is in good nick, fit some small fender flares to cover the tyre poke depending on the drums you have (stepped or not stepped)

Are the cops big on tyre poke here? And what is the penalty if caught?

Sometimes, depends if you've given them a reason to pull you over. The reason may be anything from breathing to driving like a d*ck

Penalty is a defect notice and a fine. Defect needs to be rectified and reinspected

Just out of curiosity then, with all the options and different setups of wheel width and size, what is the legal limit you can fit to a mini. Later British Coopers had Factory 13 by xx so does mean we can fit seriously over sized rims and tires on early minis? So what is the largest factory fitted wheel and tire and then what would be largest wheel and tire can legally fit and is that to any mini?

Cheers

Depends on where you are, state legislation is different state to state.

Whether or not your local RTA would accept British leyland offering a 13" rim is anyone's guess, they were never complied here with such a size. You will have to do leg work and find out what you can get away with.

If they don't accept a 13" rim as std fitment then you would struggle to find a rim over 12" that is narrow enough.

A big issue you will have if you're running non-stepped drums is inner clearance. Much bigger than 5 inches (with most mini offset wheels) and you will rub on the shock absorber or hydro spring at the back first...

If it were me I would put the money into upgrading the brakes (to a 'S' standard) before buying some bling wheels. Will make the min much more fun to drive too.

You have to understand that production stopped here in 1978, well before the sports pack minis were released in the late 90's. We all know they were offered as std fitment in the UK but they were never complied here with 13" rims. I'm not saying that you wouldn't get away with that size here in aus but you will have to contact your local RTA to see if they will accept 13" as a std size.

http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/documents/roa ... 9-rev4.pdf

Nsw lists the maximum rim width at 6" for cars pre 1973 and 7" for post 1973 cars.
