Starter has been making a grating noise engaging. so i pulled it out and found shavings, obviously from ring gear. starter seams to be operating ok on the bench. but does sound noisy to me.
Although i dont know how it should sound. :?

First check the bushes the shaft runs on mainly drive end. You will need to pull the bendix spring off and remove the drive from shaft. Check that the part of the drive barrel that is visible as 4 Dogs from the side is not broken at 4 spots.

I check the condition of the teeth. it doesn't look good. only a new ring gear.

I wouldn't worry about the ring gear too much.

Start off by following Tony's advice is my advice

You just need to undo the engine mount, jack up that side of the engine off the subframe and once unbolted the cover comes out.

Also check you have correct ring gear for the type of starter, inertia and pre-engaged have different tooth counts

ring gear for inertia starter = 107 teeth

ring gear for pre-engaged starter = 129 teeth

I don't think current new ring gears are as hard as they used to be.
One I fitted recently to a friend's 1377 stroker is badly marked (chewed) on entry all the way round, after 2600km with a new Lucas starter. [edit] The starter pinion is unmarked.

No, I didn't get it blue when fitting...!
Owner is gonna fit a Gemini starter to it now, they are pre-engaged and mesh in from the front.
