Post subject:  Engine problems..

Tried to get it started today, but after sitting round for how ever many years it has been(4? maybe 5) it wouldnt..
Now after some tinkering we got the starter motor going, we have spark and we have fuel spraying from the fuel line when disconected from the carbie. So thats the basics but still we couldnt get any sign of life from the motor. So after talking to my mechanic he mentioned the dash pot mite be jammed, so after a bit of wd40 and brake fluid we got it moveing, well that should have got the fuel going into the cylinders. But still she wont start. it turns over, sometimes even splutters lke its about to start but wont. Motors a 848cc... stock everything as far as i know.

Anyone got any ideas?
Cheers

you getting fuel in the fuel bowl ????? is the fuel arriveing at the needle and seat are the spark plugs wet .... if the plugs are wet you are geting fuel to the cylinders .... if not you are not geting fuel into the cylinders ... ok so if you are cheak plug gaps points ...... if you are not getting fuel into the cylinders the carb might need a good clean and or rebuild from sitting so long
makka

there is fuel at the plugs, i pored fuel into the bowl manually cos it was empty origionally.. And i thought about the fuel not getting from the inlet into it about 30 mins ago after packing everything up. ill give it a shot tomorrow and see if any fuels getting thru.

Fuel can go hard in the system and block things up.

Take the lid off the float bowl (3 screws) and see if it has any fuel in it. If it is dry the needle valve may be stuck. So give it a clean up and it should work.
If it has fuel in the bowl, get a bit of rag and empty the fuel out of the bowl and tip in soem fresh fuel.

The piston can stick in the dashpot so remove the air filter and see if you can lift the piston with your finger.

The main jet (under the piston) can also block up with dried fuel and it may need cleaning.

I would stick a clean set of plugs in it, check for clean fuel and try again.

Is the fuel still 5 years old ?
maybe its contaminated ith moisture etc or just with age isnt combustible enough.

Drain the tank and lines and put fresh fuel through the system :)

how old is the rubber tubing going to the float bowl? Carefuly, very carefully (petrol sometimes = fire) remove the tube at the float bowl and poke into a suitable small container....turn the engine over....does fuel come out the pipe??? Yes?? Its the carbie like Morris1100 said...strip and clean.

No fuel? do you have a mechanical or electric pump?

Mechanical....lift the top off it...dry? could be the pump or hey the problem may be further back...new lines...so could be a tank blockage causing a problem??

Electrical...power getting to it OK?? Yes??...pull it out of the line and see if it looks gunked up....if it is an SU it may need the points cleaned....etc etc

keep looking...process of elimination :D
