Hi everyone,
Sorry about the large pic, i couldn't get it to go smaller? Image now reduced by moderator

I'm new to the world of Mini's, and i'm after some advice.
This Mini hasn't been started in 12 years, i've had it for the last 2 years and its about time i get it going, but i'm not sure where to start. I've hooked up a battery and all the electrics seem to work, the engine turns over but won't start.

The motor has the engine number "12YEAH" on it, from what I researched its 1275. It has a weber carby on it, but the air filter had disintegrated, so i removed it. Not sure if the carby will need a clean now? and where i can get another air filter and other parts (i live in north/west Melbourne)

at this stage I just want to get it going so i can move it around, but eventually i want to get it road worthy and back on the road.

any advice would be greatly appreciated

cheers

Hi,

I'd be checking that you're getting fuel. Can you see or smell any at the carby? Not sure if you have a choke on the Weber - might need to be on full.

Maybe a cap of fuel down the carby could help (or that spray - start ya bastard?) just to see it it starts. make sure none of that disintegrated air filter went down the carby!!

You probably have a big list of things to check, getting spark?, spark plugs, dizzy, oil? does it have an electric fuel pump ( is it ticking?) or mechanical?

good luck!

Jason

Where do you start.
Before you do anything, change the oil. Check the oil that has come out for any traces of coolant.
Pull the plugs out and squirt a little oil down the cylinders as well.
With the spark plugs out spin the engine over until you get oil pressure.
Pull the top off the weber and clean out the bottom of the fuel bowl. Flush the fuel system and fit a fuel filter.

nsw rego check on the plate says its a 1964 WHITE MORRIS MINI SEDAN
VIN/Chassis: ********1220

I'd be seeing if its a cooper s after you get it going if that's what you brought it as

I don't know if they were first regoed as a cooper s when new

I've never read or seen a 1275 engine being numbered 12yeah going by the number plate you would think it had a 998 in it

That looks like a 29d dizzy

Good luck in getting it going

Thanks everyone, some really good info there, I'll try those things and see how I go. what sort of oil should I run? And what sort of fuel. Most of my experience in working on cars in the past has been rotarys and they run mineral oil.

A bit of history on the car. It's my partners dad's car, I think he brought it originally thinking it was a cooper s, but doesn't think so. From what I can tell it's not. It's got a coopers Id plate on the fire wall, but no other numbers match it. There is a number on top of the radiator shroud which starts with 4. The number plates are because her mum worked at the rta for a bit and he could get them as standard plates. From what I've been told before it was parked it blew a bit of smoke and something was up with third gear.

Cheers guys :)

Going by this it'd be an 1100s or 1300 Morris engine.

Assuming it ran when parked, dump the oil and put in a new filter. It may just be a case of no fuel in the carb. The oil would be junk by now anyway.

It's one of those things where fuel does funny things once it sits for a while.

You could disconnect the fuel line from the carb and crank it over to see if you're getting fuel down the lines. What pump does it have?

Valvoline 20w50 is fine. Any unleaded can be used to get it started. Once its up and running use 98 and valve saver additive.

What they all said, especially flush fuel system carefully a fill with new 95 minimum...pull the plugs and clean and check gaps and the points have probably grown together as well...

Did this one live by the sea? That's a fine amount of rust on the carby!

12YE/A/H is a Morris 1300 auto.
I have one in my car, and a spare in the corner. 8)

re the air filter, it's a Lynx Ramflo 445P5. You can get better filter pads from Unifilter, p/no LNX400. Under $10 ea online, they come pre-oiled.

The same ideas as what many people have already said, but my list would go as follows:
- Change the oil, Valvoline 20w50 is good for the price. Change and flush the coolant as well.
- Drain ALL the fuel and replace with new. Higher octane would obviously be better, and add flashlube. Some people don't use flashlube, but the way I see it, it's cheap insurance.
- Unplug the fuel line to the carby and feed it into a bottle and crank it a few times to ensure fuel is getting though (I'm assuming it's a mechanical fuel pump? If not, switch the accessories on and wait until the electric pump starts feeding fuel). Plug the fuel line back in.
- Disconnect a spark lead and hold it close the spark plug or the block and get somebody to crank it over. There should be a spark.
- Take out the spark plugs, clean and check the gap.
- Try starting it with the choke. If it doesn't start after a while, take out a spark plug. If it's wet and smells like fuel, it's a timing issue or your spark isn't strong enough. If it's dry and doesn't smell like fuel, time to take the carb off for a clean/recondition.

Awesome info, thanks everyone.

It now has a manual gearbox in it now so I guess someone has changed it at some stage. I'll get some fluids and stuff and get started, should be able to get it going with all the info from here, I'll post how I go :)

Your car would have always been a manual. Its just had an auto 1275 engine stuck in.
The 12YEAH engines are being used now because of the availability of 1275 manual engines like in the Cooper S, 1100S, GT, LS etc.
There is a few things needed to be done to an auto engine before it can be placed onto a manual box.
