Is anyone using a Smiths RVI impulse tach with elec ign? Tried last night and it has blown the elec ign module. Is there a modification needed? Thanks........ |

I used to run one on Barney's 1293A+ with a Nissan Pulsar electronic dizzy. It worked OK then. However in hot weather it would read inaccurate, probably because it was so old. |

There is a mod and a replacement circuit board. Have a look at this https://www.spiyda.com/magento/index.ph ... board.html or this http://www.speedycables.com/wiring_tacho_faq.html Easier to sell the RVI and buy an RVC |

I've just had an old 60's smiths tacho updated with a new circuit board to work with electronic ignition. Humphries Instruments in Wollongong, old school place and did a neat job. Working well so far, nice and smooth. He just needed to check that the old movement for the needle was still working ok. |

I've had my electronic ignition running with my RVI for about 6 years now. The Tacho gauge is passive, and does not emit a signal or alter the 12 volt ignition pulse. It simply watches the current passing through the wire and counts as it goes. I would suggest it was the ignition module or a fault elsewhere. Usually its the other way around, the stray pulses from the ignition module usually upsets the RVI tacho... |

Cheers. |

Just one of the UK ones. Simonbbc I used first up, but then I refurbished a 29d dizzy and fitted an accuspark. Simply positive to positive terminal of the coil and the negative from the dizzy makes the loop up to the cabin and back to the negative side of the coil. |

I tried to get the one I had converted to work before it was converted and it wouldn't work. It's marked as RVI and it's one of the type with the adjustable redline needle (approx 1969 vintage) When I showed it to the Instrument maker he said, no, it won't work with electronic ignition. So I'm not sure why some seem to work and others don't. Basically the old 60's electronic circuit board with it's oversize resisters etc is replaced with a modern version. On mine all even all the old terminal connections remain unchanged at the back (POS,NEG and COIL WIRE) |
