Post subject:  CKD Mini

With respect to a 1962 Mini, what does CKD signify?
How much of the car would have been Australian made?
How similar would it be to an English car of the same vintage?
Was the body fully imported?
What about the interior?
Details as per the photos.

CKD = Completely Knocked Down. The whole car was assembled from imported parts. The body shell was assembled from imported panels.
Local content on a Mini was very low in the beginning. It was locally made things like tyres, battery that they used initially.
It was about 64 before they started stamping some Mini panels locally.
The interior would have been imported.

Did they stamp bodies CKD somewhere or mark them in any way :?:

Can't see that happening, but it would be nice to know 8)

It is quite simple, if it is a Morris 850 or a Cooper it is a CKD body.

So where does the slot vs drillings for the roof gutter come in?

I was under the impression that the slots signified a UK pressing?

Only the very early OZ CKD 850's had the front drain slots and 2 holes at the rear. I believe this applies to 1960/61 850's with the different floor pressings and construction techniques. The very early 1959 car was different again. Later OZ 850's had 2 holes drilled for drain holes front and rear.

Early CKD 850's had the CKD number stamped as well as the local BMC Car Number, often on the passenger side of the speedo hole. The CKD number also appears on the ID plate.

I believe slots went into 62 as well have seen them the normal sill construction

So is it correct that all morris 850's and coopers were CKD? Does the change to wind ups coincide with the end of CKD cars as I know alot of later 850's(including my june 64 850) had the aussie bootlid pressing? Are the 850's/coopers that had the aussie bootlid still considered as being CKD?

My 62 Cooper 997cc is a 1961 CKD and it has 2 holes front and rear. It is well within 1st 500 assembled in OZ and all its dated components are '61. This doesn't mean that these bits didn't sit around waiting for a later shell I guess! Could be that any version of an 850 shell could be chosen to create a Cooper as the only difference is to cut out the gearchange hole, cover the magic wand hole and add some brackets. Could have been done here or in the UK?

I believe all 997cc Coopers were CKD with the later 998cc Cooper being Australian body pressings with the shorter number plate flap. 850's would have also been CKD until bodies were pressed here in 1964.

No, early 850 CKD assembled here had English tube frame seats. I had an early 1961 850 with these. And the other trim was imported then too.
Local content in 1961 was pretty negligible.

I thought that all CKD Oz assembled cars had local trim. My 1961 850 with the same seats has trim which I don't think was available in UK. It is the rare lizard skin style. All Coopers also have local trim not the UK gold or silver brocade style.
