I am looking to reco my mini k gearbox and was wondering if I should convert to mk2 cooper specs. I am planning on going down the GR 1100 small bore path. I managed to secure a 3.4 final drive. I am after reasonable acceleration and a cruising speed of 110 that doesn't deafen me. A question for ausminiers should I fork out the coin for two gears? What's the benefit over sticking with the current gears?

It will merely be slightly faster top speed in 1, 2 & 3rd, but slightly less acceleration. 4th stays the same.
I've done both my boxes, but these days I'd save yer money. Particularly with a 3.44 diff in yours.

Cheers doc. I will spend it on a comp diff pin and save some coin.

save your money on that and get a cross pin diff, I wore out a few 'competition' pins then after my diff shattered due to crappy spider gears I got a cross pin. I replaced that with a quaife, but it'll be used again eventually

If buying a crosspin diff, the Minispares allegedly has a better built reputation than the Minisport (UK) one.
This was the case years ago when I fitted a Minispares diff for someone here. The situation now may be different, I dunno. Do some googling before ya spend $$$... :)

I think so... it's all new and unworn pins, spiders, bushes, cage etc.
