Post subject:  rear stepped drum brakes when upgrading to 8.4 discs

I am soon changing out my front drum brakes for 8.4 discs. I have spacers on my rear drums (not sure how wide) and I currently have 10 inch wheels but I can see rubbing on one of the shocks. I am not sure if this is currently happening or if it was rubbing and the previous owner put on the spacers. Anyway I will be replacing the shocks and putting on 13x7 minilites  .

Will I need to get the 1 inch stepped drums? and do I have to change the length of the wheel studs to do so? (what size)

I THINK I need 58mm wheel studs for 1inch stepped drums.

there are 3 lengths, you need the longest ones

you also need 5/8" bore wheel cylinders for the back

no comment on the 13x7 wheels...

I have the different wheel cylinders and I do believe it is the 3rd of 4 lengths. Apparently there is a bigger and thicker drum out there! Yikes. Thanks Simon

I have 13x7 on my mini with 8.4" front disks and normal size stepped rear drums and the only thing I think you will need to worry about is how big the flares will need to be. I also believe spacers are illegal? Or have I misinterpreted your details?

My rear drums are finned but are the same width as Cooper S stepped drums

I will be trying next weekend, I currently have the 55mm studs, and will be putting the STD 1275GT 1" drums on the back.

Sorry to diverge here but are these the Moulton Smootha Ride cones and hilos.
If so, are you happy with it.

Yes it is Smootha ride kit
And yes very happy
It rides similar to hydro car and soaks up the Sydney pot holes very well
I think rear donuts are close to standard but fronts are much bigger in height.
Took a while to settle down to a good ride height but was ok after about 12 months

Thanks for the info Michael
I had just ordered this kit when I saw the photo of your car and was interested in your experience.

I put a smootha ride kit in my Moke about 10 years ago. It was excellent at first, but its not so good now. The cones sagged a lot over the years. It was still worthwhile though.

Tell me how you go Hobson, also where did you get yours from?. I am thinking of ordering new cones, gaz lowered shocks and hilos too... only thing stopping me is the coolant leaking from my engine block haha

sorry for the 100000000 year response on this, can now confirm you will need longer than 55mm studs, as you only get 2.5 turns on these.
