Hi All,

It's nice to receive a thank you from people that you have helped out, and it's even better to see their results improve.
This is a photo of Ian Grinter who just won the Victorian hill climb championship. Since Ian has put my products on his car(Cylinder head, cam, extractors), he has pulled over a second off all of his times, which is a lot when you think it only takes 30 secs to do a hill climb run. He will go even quicker now, now that they have retuned the engine with the new bits on it. The work was carried out by Toby and Michael Tyler at Mini Spares and Repairs in Seaford tovonminispares.com
They do an excellent job on car preparation for both road and race cars, I'd highly recommend them to anyone in Victoria.
Not to mention Ian is doing a brilliant job in driving the finished product. Well done and thanks for the thanks!

Hopefully one day I can send you a thanks.

When maybe convert the 998 auto into a 1275 manual and can leave buses at the lights. lol

great work GR

Hi GR,

You must be rapt!

What is the reason Ian has 10" on the front and 12" wheels on the back and what sort of specs would the engine/ gearbox be? Just curious.

Thanks

Michael

'tis nice to hear good things, usually you only hear the bad...

Hi Garagedfend
Why a 1275 we can make small bores out drag busses these days,we can even beat big trucks too on a good day.

Hi Deluxe67
There 10 ins wheels on the back the reason they look bigger is that we send down bottled air from NSW and they put in there tyres and as they rotate it makes the tyre get bigger and wider for more grip, we also tip 2 bottles under the bonnet before each run for that extra power, now some may say it's just HOT AIR but we know better  8)

GR doesn't just receive thanks for the things he does, he willingly thanks others as well. He's one of the busiest people I know but not too busy to pick up the phone and call to pass on gratitude for a very inconsequential thing I once did. What goes around comes around, someone once said.

Sure, but can you do this with an auto box under it?

Joking aside, I would be interested to learn the differences between an engine/gearbox package purpose built for hill climbing versus one made for track racing. I'm thinking the performance requirements would be quite different. The obvious things to consider would be gear ratios, diff and camshaft specs but I just don't know!

Can somebody enlighten me please!?

Hi Deluxe67
There is no real difference in the motors just depends on what cams you use, the engine in my car I would use happily in hill climbs, as I chase a broad torque curve and make my power by 7/75k but they will still run out to 85 hundred.
IF you use a cam like the 310 Kent Cam you would have trouble in some hill climbs as that cam likes to work up the top end of the rev range,Ian runs his car in both and I think he is running at Sandown this week end, he just runs the same diff ratio all the time.

Hi all
My name is Michael Tyler from Minispares and Repairs in Seaford Vic. I'm the one along with my father who built Ian's car, so I figure I'm qualified to add to this conversation.
I've never posted anything on this site before but after reading the kind words written by Graham I felt compelled to do so.
Firstly Ian did run at Sandown on the weekend and did absolutely fantastically, it was a terrific drive by him. He set a PB and smashed his previously good time of 131.3 by 2.5 seconds. Posting a time of 1:28.8sec. Which was a staggering improvement. For a point of reference at the 2014 Sandown historic the quickest Nb Mini was Daniel Berry (1:32) followed by Len Read (1:33). I'm unsure of the conditions that day so it's purely a comparison, and a lot can change from event to event but it does point out how well the car now goes.
This result as well as the Vic Hillclimb championship has only been achieved through a lot of hard work and attention to detail.
What's the difference between a hillclimb car and a circuit car? In my opinion nothing. Unless your trying to achieve top end power and win the dyno competition the best car is one that pulls strongly out of corners and be able to hold onto that torque curve as long as possible. Not easy to do unless you have the correct combination of bits all working in unison. This is where I can't thank Graham enough for his help and expertise. He's put the cream on the top of a project that's been building over the last couple of years. His head work and camshaft combination has enabled the engine to develop an incredible amount of torque from 4,000 to 8,200rpm (rev limited). Driven through a close ratio dog box makes for a devastating compination.
Thanks again Graham for all your help. Also without Ian's trust (cheque book) none of this would of been possible.

Regards Michael Tyler

P.S Will post some footage taken from the car (once I work out how to) in the following weeks for anyone who is interested.

I think this will work. This is a link to some footage at Sandown on the above mentioned car

Thanks for the footage, fantastic viewing. To be fair to Daniel/Len, Ian's car is Improved Production spec, so it is allowed some more freedom than the historic cars. But still, 1:28.8 is fantastic, damn quick in anyone's language. Great car & great driver!
