Ok so I'm after a steel rim look ( I have the original hubcaps)

2 things -

- Anybody bought the MS replicas ? Like ? Dislike ? Why?

- can I achieve the same or similar look with some locally sourced rims ? I would like to run A008s

I have a full set of 5 contesta ( actually I don't know what brand they are... I will check when I get home) if that interests anyone ..?

no, offset etc. dimensions are the same, the alloy is thicker than the steel so the hubcap pokes out a little further than it does on a steel wheel. This gives it a bit of a 3.5" S wheel vibe.

I used to get a lot of double-takes as people walked past the car and spotted them, they couldn't figure out what was different until they got up close, then they'd poke their finger in one of the holes, look up at me and say "are they alloy?!?"

I'm guessing one would have to make a rim this deep? You couldn't buy one?

Those are widened Cooper S steelies. Probably 5.5-6.0" wide. I used to do them for Parramatta Speed Shop back in the 60s.
Made by splitting and welding another outer rim on. Look wider than the `reversed S' wheels.

@Simon, wasn't there a hubcap problem with the alloy ones? Old caps didn't lock on or something?

They could also be the reverse offset wheels that were available in the 60's like I have

the wide offset ones are Dunlop LP918 wheels, as opposed to LP883 for standard 4.5" Cooper S

@Kev - not mine, original hubcaps lock on OK, a little looser than a steel wheel, but that's easy fixed

Simonw, has it had a hard hit on the right rear? Looks like a crease on the side panel that follows the wheel arch?

Yes TK
you'll see the nice crumple zone on my rebuild thread.
Shoould be fun to repair... though I have often thought crabs are cute

Would any body be able to post a pic of a 7 inch steel rim on a car , maybe one with the wheel arch profile?

The LP918 ones like mine aren't available unless you can by a secondhand set. They are essentially the Cooper S LP883 wheel with the inner of the wheel welded in backwards.

You should be able to find a used set of the Cooper S ones easily enough.

LP918 = 4.5x10" with offset +16. They suit cars with drum brakes and no arches
LP883 = 4.5x10" with offset +36. They suit cars with disc brakes and no arches

I guess the problem with them is that you can't be sure they've been done properly and will actually roll straight. He has measured those wrong anyway, it should be bead to bead, so they look more like 6" to me..
