Post subject:  Mk 2 S Water Leak

The run home from Rylstone on Sunday afternoon proved to be a shake down for water containment, the end result was foggy windows and wet carpet.

O'Brien's have fixed the leaking windscreen (after all they did fit it) but I still have a leak from the heater hose plate where hoses pass through the firewall. Unfortunately the original carpet tore when removed so this may have been a problem for some time, bugger.

I suspect the bonnet slam panel in front of the windscreen may be the issue. My car has a strip of rubber in the channel between both hinges. Is this meant to be there? It may be causing water overflow onto flow onto the firewall.
What about the heater hose plate? Are there meant to be grommets where heater hose passes into cabin? If not has anyone filled the void with silicon?

Once the water issue is fixed I will be in the market for a new carpet set? Can anyone recommend a supplier for Mk2 black loop pile?

Thanks for your valued feedback.

Regards

Do you have a firewall blanket fitted. This helps to direct water away from the firewall, especially protecting the back of the instrument cluster and preventing water flowing down through where the wiring passes through the shelf to below the dash, however the blanket doesn't normally cover the heater hose access point.

A rubber strip in the rear bonnet drain is correct.

My car has rubber flaps where the heater hose enters the cabin. Not sure if its original though.
Here is a photo anyway.

Mine is different. Hoses are a tight fit thru plate.

My MK1 has a gasket under the heater hose plate and the hoses are a tight fit. There is a gasket on the other plate under the master cylinders as well.
I can't remember if I have ever replaced the heater hoses.

Yes there should be a rubber gasket to seal the hose gaps through the plate. The last of the rovers used a rubber grommet to do this, and they are available but do not fit an early car like our own (I tried). See here: http://www.minisport.com/34g3651-rubber ... -body.html

The answer is to cut a piece of thin rubber to act as a gasket between the plate and the body, and with a punch or by cutting a circle, cut holes smaller than the hose diameter to seal the gap.

Water is always going to get onto the shelf there. There's a large hole at the front of the engine bay and big wheels splashing through puddles. You want a good gasket to keep the engine bay fumes out anyway in my opinion.

Water could also be coming in around the wiper escutcheons on the scuttle, then running down the firewall.
On a 1968-on Oz car, these are different shape and bigger diameter to the Mk1 type used previously. People trim those to fit but they don't seal properly.
AFAIK nobody makes these (with the right shape) now, except moi. PM me if you need a pair. I have no stock now but can machine a few sets up. Material is black HDPE plastic.

OK, Thanks for all the photos and advice. I think you are all on the right track. My heater tube to radiator hose is about 3mm smaller than plate hole, certainly doesn't look like Phillb's. I have also found the same hose has worn to half wall thickness from rubbing on L/H bag Hyd hose. I'll pull it apart and replace hoses and make up some neoprene gaskets. (might want to check yours Phill)
Thanks Doc for wiper info, they appear water tight (at the moment).

Mine seems to be 2 plates, the bottom being the bracket for the hydro and fuel hose, then a smaller plate on top, I assume there is a rubber gasket in between the 2 plates.

Thanks I'll double check my hoses.
