Hi.

I am currently rebuilding a post July 66 Cooper S, and was looking at the pictures in this brochure below

I was wondering if I could get peoples opinions on the photos in the brochure.

If you look at the engine bay photos, There are a few particular things that catch my eye...

No PCV valve, but there is Hydro pipes meaning its

Breather from rocker cover to airbox

Solid Heater pipe around back of motor

Brake lines to booster follow a peculiar path

Solid line for oil cooler

I was wondering then when things like PCV and front mount oil cooler were introduced. Any help appreciated

Fred,

The pictures used in some of the BMC brochures were cobbled together or were prototype vehicles so by all means use them for reference but not as proof that a certain setup was standard throughout the life of a car.

According to the Cooper S register with Watto's observations:

1. YKG2S2/986 delivered March 1966 - "Last car with early master cylinder seals & brake servo pipes", whatever that means. Perhaps it meant the pipes were as per the photo but then changed to come across the top of the booster with the clip holding the pipes together as is most common on the Mark 1.

2. YKG2S2/1344 delivered around August 1966 - "Oil Cooler increased to a 13 tube unit", which presumably means the smaller vertically mounted cooler was replaced by the larger horizontal mounting with Smiths Petroflex hoses.

Have you got the various Cooper S articles done by Watto in The Mini Experience magazine? I would use photos of those as another guide. The Mark 1 was in Issue #1. Also John Parnell's book, although it mainly covers the UK made cars.

That engine bay picture reminds me that the change point for deletion of the plastic master cylinder extension tubes was YKG2S2/3792 - around December 1967. Wonder why they were discontinued? Did they leak and cause more problems than they were meant to solve?

Thanks for that info. My car had them when i bought it and yes they leaked. I just put o-rings around the base to fix it. Its handy to see the fluid level rather than unscrewing the cap everytime to introduce rubbish.

The white car in that first brochure I believe is likely the same car as featured in a few early magazine articles including Wheels August 65 where it is airborne on the cover (rego DLD-322). In that article it states it as a prototype. It's a very early hand built car when they were trying to work out how everything should go. This car appears in a few Australian magazine articles. Note the rough brake pipe work and solid heater hose section.

Theres a later dark blue (or Black?) Cooper S rego (DXK 522) that appears in quite a few magazine articles from early 1966. It has a more traditional engine bay. This is from Australian Sports Car World July 1966.

...note how they just spray painted green right over the oil cap. You don't see anyone doing THAT for their concourse resto!!! I've seen a few original cars where the cap still has evidence of the paint.

Hello Fred,
Ian from Adelaide here, - I have both this brochure & the August 1965 magazine with the road test of DLD 322, & I can assure you they are both of a prototype "with extra plumbing", & should not be used as a point of reference for your '66 Cooper S. The solid oil cooler pipe is typical of the nine row cooler mounted under the dynamo of the 1965 models (with the upright slam panel brace) & the brake servo lines are nothing like Garry Knight's 1965 (very original) '65 car. Even the air filter box (in the magazine, but not the brochure) has the breather tube in the centre instead of off to the left hand side, so I reckon the brochure or mag are not to be taken too seriously..
The brochure appears to be touched up in several areas & features a brake master cylinder from a Mini Deluxe (or 850 etc.). It also boasts of the Mini winning the "1967 Monte Carlo", so the time line is a bit out of whack for a 1965 car/1966 brochure.
The best engine bay shot for your '66 is the one someone has posted earlier of a 1966 brochure, the same pic. I have already sent to you.
