Hey Guys, hopefully this is an obvious question. I've just finished putting an 1100 into my Morris. Have gone to try to set the timing, but can't see any timing marks at all. We've turned the flywheel multiple times but there are no marks on it?? Any suggestions? Are we missing something? Thanks Richard |

Half asleep so hopefully this makes sense. Pretty typical if the flywheel has had some skimmed off it at some point... Basically process is as follows to get it timed roughly 'straight up' so you can set it properly with a timing light (or the old hold the revs and fiddle the dizzy). - Remove the rocker cover and spark plugs. Rotate the engine until number 1 is close to TDC with both valves closed (not being depressed by rockers) - best way to rotate the engine, if you can, is to put the car in 3rd with the handbrake off and nudge it around to spin the engine. - stick a long screwdriver or dip stick or equivalent into number 1's spark plug hole and nudge the engine back and forward to find TDC. - pop your dizzy cap off and wherever the rotor is facing is number 1. - using a multimeter or the like, set the points so they are just opening at this point. Once you put everything back together it should fire up but won't run properly until you get the timing set properly. |

Flywheel has probably been lightened. I suggest pit a timing mark on the timing cover, set to TDC using a pushrod in #1 plug hole and a dial gauge, then mark & file a V on the pulley. This will give you TDC, then use a dialback timing light to set the timing with. Or, mark out the pulley with 5, 10 and 15 deg marks (use your schoolboy trig knowledge).
