well finally i get to do something cool at school. the assignment is on the development of a specific vehicle or mode or transport. e.g bus pushbike etc. one of the options was MINI !!! :D so thats what im doing.
now. i need to chronicle the development of the unique parts of the mini. so if anyone has some good info on specific parts development it would be greatly appreciated if you could post it here. cheers

LOL! You're still at school and you've got scantily clad babes draped over your car... NICE ONE BRUDDA!!!

As far as development, the major devolpment came from the original design of the car, as the rest of the car reained relatively unchanged for many years. The fact that it's a transverse engine means that it can be crammed into the tiny car, which was crucial to the Mini's success.

Yeah, uh, this is exactly what I said before. I think it's called an transverse engine becasue it runs east to west and I'm certain the Mini was the first (only?) car to do this.

Be careful about checking your facts - I was mis-quoted in an article in the local paper about the club as saying the mini was the first ever front wheel drive. I got hate mail from some loser who felt in necessary to not only list all of the front wheel drive cars that came before it, but proceeded to crap on about me being the promotions officer for the club should spend more time researching etc etc got quite personal.

I only just resisted the temptation to mail him back saying that the mini was the first front wheel drive car anyone actually cares about. He may have started hunting me down!!!

There's some weirdos out there :o

I think some of the 1930s Rolls Royce type cars were front wheel
drive at one point for more interior room. Car still had N/S engine layout
though.
The revolutionary part was putting the gearbox in the sump, to save space and use same oil.

I had to make a program for my software development major assignment for yr 12.. So I made 'The Mini Manual' basically it was like a computer based encyclopedia about minis. And it also had a section where you type in a problem with your mini, and it gave you a possible solution. I would post the program to let me see/use it but I think it breaks lots of copyright laws (I stole all the information off websites and forums).

oh yep good luck with your project

Citroens had front wheel drive very early in the piece.

The reson Minis are often thought of as the first frint drive cars
is because the technology was made accessible to the gen public
in a cheap and affordable package that had great handling and
displayed the space sving advantages of FWD, whereas many of
the early FWD cars were very big and expensive.

dont forget to say that the gears were located in the engine sump
i think the 1100, 1300, 1500, 1800 had sharing sumps and hydrolastic
most of them came out before the mini so be careful about quoting 'first'

and what other silly car put a side mounted radiator?
