Post subject:  burr walnut dashboard | which one is best?

I'm looking at getting a 3-clock burr-walnut dashboard with chrome dial surrounds for my 1275LS.
I'm after a high-quality one that's "plug n' play". What's the best one to get?

I have an aunty in the UK who could bring it with her when she comes over in Oct.

Appreciate any feedback.
Chris.

I am personally very happy with the fit and finish of all the timber I bought here. Replaced the dash, door caps, window winders and door pulls with the burr walnut, 3+3 and couldn’t be happier.

Thanks.
That looks good, the price is right too.
I can imagine it'd look amazing in your Rover Mini.

I got the mini spares one too, very happy with the finish of the wood work. Only thing I could say is the gauge surrounds and indicator ones are cheap nasty chromed plastic. I made some alloy ones to replace them , other than that, great.

I've ordered one.

How did you make your custom surrounds?

Turned them up on lathe. Have only fitted the indicator ones so far, the others are packed away somewhere, haven't found them since we moved.
Are you getting door caps as well?

Door caps? No, just the dash. I do have some John Cooper door sills I bought when I popped in
to the Cooper Garage in Ferring/ Worthing UK. I hired a Cooper for the weekend from them
and cruised along the south coast. TBH my LS1275 is a better drive; the hire Coopers have spongy
high profile rubber.

Winabbey; no, I didn't see those despite having a thorough bloke look on the Internet.
Thanks for the heads-up; that's a great price too.

Thanks for the link Peterb.

Birthday present arrived early; Huddersfield Spares dashboard :
Packaging was dire, I'm surprised it survived relatively undamaged.
Cardboard box with very little support material inside so the dash, despite being wrapped with 2 mm foam,
was free to cavort around inside.

Summary: finish is fantastic; the fake burr-walnut has a deep lustre which is remarkable since it's just 9-ply plywood.
Dial rings are plastic and have pitted but you'd need to look very closely. They're not mint but for me they're fine.

The Aussie dollar being the way it is means delivered it was $435.00AUD.
So not cheap. In hindsight, Mini Kingdom would have been just as good.

Chrome rings weren't "pitted", it was just residue. A bit of elbow grease and they were AOK.

Removed 3-dial dash sub-assembly from the mini and offered it up to the new dash...and it doesn't fit.

Am I missing something?

Maybe it's made for the later UK Nippon Seiki gauges, not the Smiths ones we got here?

Good point on the Nippon gauges but I wasn't sure so emailed Huddersfield and
Kate Ratcliffe advised to "...trim the 2 indicator housings so that the gauges will
fit flush to the back of the dashboard."

I've done that and yes it's better but the dial glass retaining clips won't allow
the dials to fit flush and there's an awkward gap.

I'll likely fix the dial glass to the dash (epxoy/bog mix) and then to do away with the
clips entirely and bond the dial surrounds again with epoxy/bog mix.

Dial bezels have had a strip and re-spray in Rustoleum black.
