Newbie here with a Mini '73 MK3 Round Nose - South African body Mini (That's what I can gather from the history of the vehicle) Correct me if I'm wrong

I bought is as is, and previous owner has done most of the job on this.





1275 Donk - twin 1.25" SU



Front brakes just clears 10" mini lites



Previously I owned a 1962 MK1 Mini 850 which was half way build with 1275 etc, but I sold it because changed in situations back then. Pretty disappointed that I sold it but oh well, Time to move on..






I now own the '73 for almost a year now, and its has been sitting duck in the garage due to a few issues. Which I have not actually solve, hence I joined the forum for a few tech Questions.

I have this Cut out issues while driving, Engine just died when driving.
I even put it on gears and it still doesn't fire up.

Once i pull over, and waited for at least 10-15 minutes, it then fired up again but may be another 20-50 ks down the road and it would cut off again, i would then repeat it again.

I have jumped the Immobilizers which I taught was the caused, and it wasn't
Checked fuses and replaced them.

I'm suspecting a faulty Distributor pick up, as i'm running mechanical fuel pump

or something to do with temperature - something gets hot and decided to die.

Since i wasn't the one who built up the car as current state, for my own piece of mind my current solution is to order up:
A new fuel pump
Re-do fuel hose lines (as its getting old and i've seen cracks on the soft hoses)
A new distributor

Interm of electrics, The car have Ground to body
and a new wiring kits layed out through out.

Could anyone suggested any directions for me to get the car up and running with out cutting out?

Next time it cuts out you need to run a few diagnostics (while its dead). Is there fuel in the carb bowls? Does the fuel pump pump? Is there 12v to the coil? Are the points opening (and closing:)? Is there a spark at the plugs?

If you have fuel and spark, air is unlikely to be a problem....

looks to me it could be a rover. internal door hinges no quarter vent windows rover front grill ?

could be the coil playing up. I had the same symptoms and it was a dodgy coil...

Stealth box, as Doc says "goes harder and idles!"
RH tank cos I needed it crossing the Nullarbor etc..

Interesting...I know that the Seth Afrikaans were/are well and truly capable of building or assembling just about any vehicle...but, for example, were MK3s ever CKD'd

I don't think it's a rover, with non booster brake on the firewall?

Lots of yellow on the inside...

Headunit located at the standard switch panel

I hate the yellow inside but, the wife seems loving it.. so I can live with that..

as 1071 S said, next time it cuts out take the carb float bowls off and see if there's fuel in there.

It may be as simple as the wrong fuel filler cap or the tank breather blocked up

Humm... I just puzzle the car back together

And took it for a another spin at night.

When driving, again 10 minutes
Car died



Conditions before car died:
Key still on ignition
Headlight on
Dash light on
Drive normal

And then Car suddenly cut off when driving.

It Seems to be electrical problem

Car rolling still rolling with gear on but no power at all.
Ignition off ( no ignition light on dash either)
All lights off ( Dash light, headlight)
Rolling like a dead car.

Again waited for 10 min
Car starts and drive for the next 2 - 5 min and it will die again.

When the car is on idle
Check voltage on coil 5-6
volts
Battrey voltage at 14v (so generator is running)

I'm running out of option at the moment =/
Seems like the gremlins won again.

So far what I have done is
Change fuel pump
Replace vacuum hose
Replace fuel hose
replace coil



I tried fitted aldon red - electronic distributor with no starting luck ( cranks, spark, have fuel until flooded)
I'll try again later and will check the ignition lead order. I assumed it was the same as the Stock ones, may be not?

So I revert back to standard contacts vacuum dizzy and it starts straight away.

Oh yes, I checked the car floats when it died.
There is fuel in there and it's clear
No dirt in it.

I also installed clear in line filter after the pump, and there is fuel. And no dirt.

Have you got a dodgy fuse. Carries current till it warms up and then breaks. Closes up when it cools.
