Post subject:  Subframe Bolt Q's
Well, on the weekend I decided I'd put a rear subby back in the mini to help when moving it around the garage. I 've got one side of the frame bolted in, couldn't quite get all the bolts on the other.

Anyway, the front long bolt that horizontally bolts into the body is just turning, ie. the thread on the nut/shell is stripped, so it won't do up tight. Any solutions?

Snapped a bolt in the hole next to the other 1 ^.

Probably should replace with all new nuts, bolts and washers.
Why wouldn't the subframe be lining up?
Is it off another car?

Yeh, the subframe is off an 850 that I've got. I just need to jack the one of the front corners up into position, I just can't locate the bolt hole with the bolt where it is.

Edit.

This is all temporary, I will be using all new bolts etc. I'll possibly get a solid subframe mounting kit.

Ypu'd be better getting the new bolts now,
then you'll have them for later, and you'll have less trouble than say a head breaking off with the old ones.

get new bolts....If the old bolt is stuck in...you may have to redrill and tap a larger size

Also if replaceing.....put some copper grease on them so they wont rust as yours may have :wink:

Sounds like the captive nut is threaded! :shock: That can get nasty....since the captive nut is housed inside the sill! :shock:

Hmmm......I don't know what to suggest, appart from DO NOTHING UNTIL YOU CAN DO THE RIGHT THING!

As in its a nut welded to the body on the inside of the sill? In which case, can you get to it from just taking off the outer sill?

you could always use a helicoil.
Kits are about 30 bucks.

if your clever... you could grind (cut) out the old captive nut.. get the right nut to replace it.. weld it to a bit of steel/sheet steel... and weld it back into place... thats what i'd be doing before sandblasting another shell :shock:

You could just re tap it one size larger, then use a bigger bolt.

that would be the easiest way by far... for the broken bolt one. but thers still the turning captive nut :?

it sounds like a horrible job :(

Just poke a mig end up there, give it a quick zap, problem fixed.
