I had a 200KMH `Smiths' (aftermarket) speedo in my Mini.
This one:

It has now done around 20,000KM. For the last year or so the speed indication has crept lower and lower at a given speed. However the odometer still reads correctly. Eventually I fitted a 140KMH Moke one instead.

Today I took the 200KMH one to an instrument repairer (who shall remain nameless) for a repair quote.
He tested it, its speed @ 60KMH was indicating 17KMH low. Then tested at 100KMH? it was much further out.
His comment:
" These speedos made since Smiths closed down are not well made, there is little or no lube held in the spindle bush, so they either wear bad (like mine has), or they seize up". Not worth fixing, he reckons.
I had a 130MPH version of this same speedo, it worked just fine for nearly 30,000 MILES until I swapped it out for the 200KMH one.
I know Danny_ has just seized his 200KMH one of the same type, so my question: how common is this? Is it worth just shelling out for another new one, and hoping for the best?
Or can other places fix them so they last, at a reasonable price?

When I lived in Melbourne. I had a few things fixed by Howard Instruments. The good thing he is a mini guy. May be worth a call Kiwiinwgtn

Yes, they have had issues with the 200 KPH speedo's, inc voltage stab. WE have been fitting the late 140/160 KPH internals to the new speedos for reliability, steel internals instead of plastic. AB.

There is also an 860turns/km Moke one, it's pretty close for a 3.64 diff and 10" wheels. That's what I put in Barney when we owned him. Sorry, I have no idea what year Mokes these KMH speedos are from, I'd say big wheel ones though.

A sad state of affairs...feedback to the suppliers may get the "manufacturers" (word used advisedly!) to clean up their act or induce the suppliers to find another source

Several of us Newcastle cars have had the same problem. Had a local instrument repairer replace the internals (supplied by us) but was still expensive-more than the cost of the speedo originally. Even more annoying was having to take mine back a couple of times as they calibrated it incorrectly.

Looks like I'll just keep using the Moke one, and hang this sick puppy on the wall. It's only a club car now, so not worth spending a small fortune. Can Nb cars use a 200KMH speedo face? if so, it might have further use as decoration.
