Hi all,

I have labelled these photos I took of my HIF44 carby. Could you please confirm for me what I should connect to each pipe (note 'A' is blanked off).

I have searched on this and other forums, however my carby appears to be different. On my carby 'A' is blanked off as shown. When I have searched online I have found that people refer to this as the place that the fuel in should go. Any help appreciated ta.

2 is the fuel line, with A being the exact opposite side to 2. The carb can be set up from the factory with left or right side fueling, the opposite side is simply blanked.

1 is for the choke cable.

B is the breather (goes to the fuel tank on late minis)

C is crank case ventialtion

Twice I have connected the fuel line to B instead of 2 and wondered why the bastard flooded and would not run!

Yep - that's what I had done before I asked

Engine started by the way. Fuel in 2. Attached an empty fuel line in B just for a breather/overflow and blocked off the crankcase vent.

Good stuff. I did the same as you but I plumbed B into the air filter. It prevents dust getting into the float bowl.

Ah cool. Yeah I might do that when I install the engine into the car. Actually, given I will be running an electric fuel pump, should I use that as a fuel return line?

No, its just a vent or breather, not a return line.

You don't need a return line to run an electric pump. Just make sure the pump you buy delivers the right pressure and no more than that. 3 or 4psi I think it was - best to check. Too much pressure and the needle and seat will stay open and the carb will flood.

I think you will find B is already plumbed into the air filter, you can see the casting passage pointing backwards in the image as well as straight down. The point still stands for dust protection however, I just use a little rubber cap you can get from the bolt rack at supercheap etc with a drop of superglue on it to help it bond a little bit better. They have a tendency to get knocked off otherwise.
