I have no experience but that does seem expensive! Especially considering the exchange rate at the moment.

I know someone who could fill half a container with em and flood the market! Never ceases to amuse and amaze what some people will pay for something they think is rare and desirable...

If it were 200bhp it might be worth it.

But then there are ones like this too: Link

Are MPI engines really worth less than half the price?

The pressed steel rockers shown there are wrong for an S, I wonder what else inside it is not kosher?
I can't believe what these things are going for over there!

Yes. The later 1275 engines are really not worth much over there, at least compared to a genuine Cooper S engine.

The average price of a 1275 Cooper S over there is probably up over £25k (about $55k) at the moment so getting the right engine can mean a lot to the value of the car!

All that coin and no nots on the head studs...

methinks the 3500 pound S engine will go towards making a more humble Mini into a 25000 pound Cooper S. Probably even matching numbers to a heritage certificate.

The S engine in the ebay auction looks like the 'thick flange' block which was used in the Mk3 S from about '69 to end of production in mid '71. These are pretty rare, and anyone looking to do an original Mk3 S restoration could be chasing it. But ironically the values of the Mk3 S are much lower than Mk1 or Mk2 versions...

There are rumours that Minispares in the UK are getting these thick flange S blocks remanufactured, but they still won't be cheap.

Getting up there. Last Mk 2 Block with caps on Ebay, around $1000 ,good crank $600,rods $150,Cam $150,Head $600,Gearbox must be around $1500-2000. Thats $4500 Then all the extras:Primary Gear, rocker, head studs, tappet cover,Flywheel, clutch, housings, pulley, brackets and other ancillaries ,probably another $500. There's your $5000, not counting any reconditioning.

I sold my +.040" Mk2S block & caps last year for $600. I thought that was a good price then?
Considering good (std bore) 1100S blocks go for $350-450.

Yes Cooper S prices are going for BIG $$ over in the UK... And I hate to say it, Australia will be going the same way. we tend to follow the international classic car market by about 3 years...

Lucky I have no plans on selling my Matching number S.... unless they start going for GTHO money... lol
