Post subject:  Height of Engine in Engine Bay.
I've always noticed my oil cap seems to rub on the bonnet underside. The air cleaner is also really close.

Is it possible the engine mounts are too thick?

If I place a straight edge across from fender to fender I have a gap of approx 19mm (see pic).

Moved further back it just touches the black caps of the carbies.

How does this compare with other cars. Note that my rocker cover has a tall neck. I believe this is correct for my car. I use a standard vented cap.

I just did the same as you and got 33mm.

That is on a small bore which don't sit as high as a big bore (I believe there is 3/8" difference between the block height).

That rocker cover neck looks a lot longer than what's on an 1100S, which has the same vented cap.
I always thought the 2 covers were the same, save for the 2 head nut notches?
1100S one is 19mm above the cover.
I have one spare if needed.

Well that's the other possibility. My rocker cover is not an original cooper s one as I had to add the notches but I was also of the opinion they were same.

Basically I'm trying to work out if everything is correct why is it touching the bonnet.

I'll check the neck height tonight.

Photo of my unmolested MK II S rocker cover below. Since it was manufactured in pre-metric days I've included an imperial measurement. :shock: :)

Also a photo of a spare I have. If you find your neck is too long this one is all yours for the cost of postage, or I should be up your way prior to year end if you can wait that long. It has a small ding in one corner but otherwise in good nick. Will need a repaint.

phillb -- just another weird thought - you havent got a short or long top engine steady ( the one thatcomes from under MC bracket) and this is tipping your engine over a taller axis point - only reason i suggest i happened to see some minispares adjusta ones and they were either 120 or 150mm>>>>???? as a base?

Thanks for that Doug, that confirms it's not my filler neck thats the problem, (thanks for the offer of cover too) mine is identical height to your original.

Thanks, yeah I thought of that too. Mines approx 165mm between the centres. I'm sure it's standard type. Marked MOWOG 21A1109

Below is the extent of the contact. The metal rivet in the centre of the oil cap has worn a decent divot in the bracing! It will eventually wear a hole. If I had the original sound matting I reckon I'd struggle to close the bonnet. :shock: ......Maybe the bonnet bracing is unusually low?? :? :?

Another measurement I have is 33mm from the top of the air cleaner to the top edge of the rear channel.

Also I have noticed the oil filler cap of the alloy one has been rubbing on the bracing of the underside of the bonnet.


Is the rubbing left over from the previous alloy rocker cover that you had?

Phill - how does the base of the radiator tank align with the radiator shroud? If higher or at an angle (i.e. not parallel) it might indicate an incorrectly located power plant.

No. I had a metro cover and the filler was in the middle. It had a huge bling flip top cap too.

Doug, re radiator,
Yeah I thought of that too. It's perfectly parallel level compared to the shroud. Position forward and height I'll take some picks. I was going to ask what your air cleaner measurement was then remembered it's a police pack. Can anyone else give me the air cleaner to bonnet channel height??

Another thing that could contribute is your engine mounts. Some of the newer mounts are thicker than the old ones - I had a nightmare getting my engine back in. But that could get the engine sitting a few mm higher.
