I am looking at using 2 old engine steady bars to make some lower gearbox stabilizers.
Will these bend easily with a bit of heat? I only need to put a 45 degree twist on one end.
Cheers Brad

No they will break, are cast iron. Cut the bent bit out, thread the 2 bits M12 and make it a turnbuckle.

I have modded a lot of these steadies to be adjustable.
When cutting the M12 thread note the following:
1. They are a casting, and are not perfectly round, are over 12mm in places. Run them on a bench grinder if needed to true them up. Put a good chamfer on the cut end to get the die started easily.
2. Cast iron is brittle; I found if I lubed the die with motor oil, it prevented the thread chipping. Reverse (back off) the die once every revolution, as for steel..

I ended up adding a new one to a buy i am doing. For me $16 it wasn't worth the hassle.

Might be easier to make new ones from scratch.
