Hi Guys...new to the forum so look forward to some assistance. I have a '63 Cooper which had a shudder in the clutch on downchange, so I have changed the clutch and that problem is solved..however..before I pulled it down the clutch pedal was very low to the floor, and now it's even worse. I have fitted new clutch kit, and had the flywheel and pressure plate machined. I have bled the system and adjusted the clearance on the operating lever and throwout stop but the pedal (altho it operates the slave almost immediately) has to be pumped and still has to be pushed to the floor before the clutch activates. It seems like the pushrod on the master or the slave should be longer, and as Stated earlier this was a problem before the rebuild. Has anyone any idea? |

Sounds like the master cylinder piston is seized half way. |

Remove the return spring on the slave cylinder and it makes the hydraulics self adjusting. Can't hurt to try. |

Start with the easiest fixes first , change out the slave cyl and see if that improves it , if not , can you get hold of a good working M/Cyl and swap it out to see if that does the trick . How was the m/cyl bore when you put a kit in it , it doesn't take much of a mark/ score or pitting in it to make it not operate efficently. |

Thanks for the replies. As I haven't replaced any of the master or slave hydraulics sounds like I'll try them next although they both seem OK..maybe one is not operating fully |

I had a similar issue with my clutch. All items brand new and there is no play in anything. What I found is the push rod on the new master cylinder is too short and needs to be extended by 6mm. If you look at where the pedal and the master Cylinder connect with the cleaves pin the pedal should be nearly touching the body. Any gap you loose throw You must also make sure there is no free play at any swivel point eg worn clutch arm ball, cleves pins. Even on my Moke I the same issue. Hope this helps |

Tried the easiest suggestion first. Weird !! but thanks 'gotogreen1969.' I removed the return spring on the slave and tried the clutch. It was a little better, so I installed a softer return spring and all of a sudden I have lifted the actuation to about 50mm off the floor instead of hard on the floor. Don't understand why, but am very thankful for the simple fix. Now I can use the car on a mini club run this weekend. Over the next few weeks I will check out the hydraulics and pushrod lengths as suggested Thanks again all !! |

I must admit that i drove around for a month with the spring in the door pocket just in case. My clutch now is the best of any mini i have driven. It disengages before the pedal goes to half way.
