Post subject: | Engine question |
Hi everyone, I got my moke going today and was running well, i timed it to 5 degrees, but then all of a sudden it started going haywire. It now blows white smoke on revving, head has just been reconditioned for unleaded, new valves ect.., new water pump. It will run well then all of a sudden go lumpy and cut out and not start for another five minutes. I had this engine going without any smoke whatsoever before head conversion to unleaded. I have changed distributor and coil and same issues persist. Anyone have these symtoms before? I put new head gasket on when doing the head. Have tried adjusting the single 1.5 SU but no luck. Have no idea what is going on. Any help appreciated. Cheers, Steve |

if it's really white, then it's steam / condensation. Cup your hands over the exhaust and see if you get drops of water take the radiator cap off while the engine is running.... look for big bubbles losing water? water on the spark plugs? water sitting on top of the pistons? (use a torch) |

just went and started it again, no bubbles in water, hasnt lost any water, no condensation and now hardly any smoke even on rev up, but still has the issue of running well then all of a sudden going lumpy and not starting for ages. Hmmmm |

No water on plugs or in cylinders, white smoke seems intermitent |

Problem Solved!!!! Some dick head (ME!), had put the breather pipe hose from the crank onto the carb breather! Took it off and no smoke at all, just had to keep my finger on the carb breather hole. Im gathering a bit of oil in the carb was causing is to run like crap as is built up, hopefully all sorted! Is it okay to block that one off? |

was blue smoke then! yes, you can block off the carb breather, but there shouldn't really be that much oil coming out of the breather. What comes out when you load it up? was it an old engine before you had the head done up? it sometimes happens that a new head on an old engine is sealing properly, so compression blows past the rings and suddenly you're up for a bottom-end rebuild |

No smoke under load, runs sweet now except had an occasional backfire, it then cut out, noticed no fuel in filter, checked mechanical pump and it is stuffed. Will change that and all sorted. Has 130 compression on all cylinders, might put a carb kit through it while doing fuel pump. Cheers, Steve |

Has excellent oil pressure too. Was an older engine, unused for 30 yrs!!! Bores like new, gearbox one of the best I've driven. There is no oil coming out breather but it's fumes must have caused smoke somehow. Am happy there isn't even a puff of smoke anymore, oil pressure above 50, down to 30ish when warm and temp staying steady ![]() |
