I have a 12G940 head with a just visible crack in an exhaust seat, does anyone know if it can be fixed and if so is it worth doing? Thanks

do not throw it away - or if you do, I'll pay the postage to send it down to me...

exhaust seat cracks should be fixable, just needs seat inserts which I always get done anyway. If the crack is terrible and goes back into the chamber, then maybe it's no good, but chances are it's fine

with more advanced welding techniques, like laser welding, getting more commonplace even bad cracks will become repairable without breaking the bank

I will take a photo of my 940 head and post it .
Sorry simonk ... This was the head ! And on closer inspection I discovered a dirty split between seats on chamber 3 :o

Cracks between seats are often fixable. But cracks that go down into the exhaust port for a distance usually cannot.

Geez, that head is crusty! If it's a 940 IMO it's not worth the trouble. Find another, or...
Ring Graham Russell, he has some brand new ones.

A member here had one cracked like that. Except, when I used the dyecheck kit, I found it went all the way from that water jacket hole on the face, down the chamber to that spot, then continued across the valve seat and down into the exhaust port.
No way to save it, couldn't weld inside the port, so we binned it.
Note-
The person who sold to him had disguised it by painting the head face and chambers with silver paint. We didn't find it until I started to deck the head.
Moral of story, NEVER buy a head with painted combustion chambers...!

Thanks, you can see the crack does go down into the port. I am just doing a bit of a rationalisation of parts, I will put that head on the not so good pile

on closer inspection you can see the crack starting at the hole in the water jacket, just as Doc described. The head has now been "repurposed" just proving the A series will never die, it is now a 12940 garden
