Post subject:  Need help, can't undo brake coupling

So I am in the process of swapping drum to disc and cone to coil but have hit this problem. I can't undo the coupling where the brake line from the drum brakes meets the subframe. I tried spanners and then had to resort to vice grips because the small internal nut is rounding when i rotate the large external nut (if i grip the large internal nut the small nut spins and bends the brake line). I have soaked it in WD-40 and still doesn't want to budge. Basically when i try and undo the bottom bit the whole lot rotates together. Any ideas on how to fix this?

You need to hold the flexible rubber hose with a spanner and get a good pair of vice grips onto the small pipe nut.

If you are lucky the pipe nut will brake free and still be reusable. If you aren't lucky you will need a new brake pipe.

The pipe nut screws into the flexible hose and they are currently locked up tight together. The large nut on the outside of the flexible hose is only there to secure it all correctly.

When reassembling, do the brake hose up on the brake caliper/wheel cylinder and then put the other end into the subframe. That large nut can then be done up to secure the flexible hose in such a manner that has no kinks and doesn't rub on anything as the wheels turn etc. Then screw the pipe in.

I'd get the angle grinder out, cut & bin it, fit a new hose and replace the brake pipe too.
You need a flare nut spanner (slotted thick single hex ring spanner) to undo flare nuts without damage.

Yep that's got angle grinder written all over it in my opinion :)

Yep flare spanner for pipe then a bloody long extension on a socket for the hose nut and a person under the guard with a spanner holding the hose its a easy job with the right tools

Thanks for the info about mini kingdom, but are there any places in the Brisbane / gold coast area that might stock the two front brake pipes? I would rather pick up this kind of item them have it sent in the mail, purely given the size and soft nature of the metal

Any brake shop can make one to sample.

Yes, take the old one into a brake shop and have them make another. If they add another inch or so, that's not a bad thing. You shape the pipe to fit with your fingers.

I had one made to sample by my local brake guys a few months back (before I got my new flaring tool) and it cost me $26 I think, with 2 new pipenuts.
