Can someone enlighten me as to what the basic engine/ gearbox/ FDR specs were on the bathurst cars. I'm guessing they were running a 648 camshaft? What sort of power were they putting out compared to what's possible today i.e. GR's car?
Just curious,

Thanks

The Bathurst cars were stock. Totally stock. They were as bought off the production line and then tuned.
Blueprinting was allowed which means the cars could be built to the maximum tolerance but no more.
The factory cars had the advantage of being able to pick the best stock parts.

The 648 cam wasn't allowed, changes to the diff ratio weren't allowed.

I'd like if production racing was as popular as the V8 supercars is. Real racing, drivers against drivers makes against makes, 4's,6's, v8's all in together :)

The trouble with actual production racing is policing the cheating. That's why it always evolves into modified racing.

So the mk2 S's and minis racing into 1970's. I assume these would have been based on police spec with 731 cam and 1 1/2 su's as they were homologated and would have sold over 500 in that format?

I'm guessing then that the average souped up 1275 mini these days has more grunt. First 9 cars home, amazing....

Yes. Greg Coates ex O'Keefe car and Rocky Canto's ex Welsor car are both SPO41 police specification for the MK II S.

Slightly off topic, but I'd love to see someone turn up at next year's Bathurst event with headlights taped like this! Totally period correct..

Think you've just given someone a great excuse to do it!

I reckon they will need a copy of that pic to show the organisers

They were running in Group C from 1973 onwards and were allowed a lot more freedoms. (like whatever carby you want as long as the inlet manifold is unchanged)

The Minis up to 1972 would have been totally stock (except for the cheating bits)

The reason they got 9 cars in a row was that there was nothing else in the race. The winning Ford Cortinas from the year before were banned and there was nothing else with a chance. A good example is that the top Ford factory drivers were in Minis in 66.

The Minis should have had the first 15 places except for people blowing up and crashing.

But 69,70,71. Having SPO41 build would have been classed as totally stock as they were homologated and sold the 500?

Thanks Doug

Remember SPO41 was effective from Sept 1970 so the 1971 race would be the earliest those cars could participate. Clubman GT's built to SPO28 were FIA homologated (I have the CAMS homologation form somewhere).

Correct, although the ability for the mini to use the weber wasn't initially in Group C and only came about in 1975, which is technically the last year the mini could run in Group C as the cars weren't allowed to be more than 5 years old. Some cars managed to beat this clause and continued to run as a Group C car, benefitting from the ever loosening rules. This seems to be the case in WA and QLD, where I believe making up numbers was a bit of an issue, so the cars were allowed to run. Unless someone can show otherwise I believe my red car was the last running Group C mini in Aus, and is logged as a Group C right up until 1983, and is "ahem....less than standard" There was a clubman GT run in QLD as late as 1979 by Tony Jay. I know where the logbook for that car is but the car itself is long gone.

Back on topic,
Those 66 cars were actually showroom cars that were reclaimed by BMC and then the engines rebuilt and everything given a once over. The cars were only painted on the outside, according to John Kemp who I spoke with at length on the matter. If you watch the footage of the 66 race when you see 13C in the pits, the door opens and you can see the inside of the car is actually white. Kind of screws up the Bathurst replica at the museum hey?
