Hi guys,
Found an engine in my collection and need a second opinion. Crankshaft is 12A596 Engine block is 12A497 but it hasn't been machined to take a fuel pump and has factory stamped Morris 1100 engine number.?? I reckon it might be a 997 Cooper.
Any Ideas ??

12A497 is normally a 998/1098 block. Can you measure the bore on the one you have now?

12A596/12A595 is a 998 crank. You might be able to measure and get an idea of the stroke, and see if it is definitely 997 (81.3mm) or 998 (76.2mm)

It might be a Morris 1100 motor. The first 24000 or so had electric fuel pumps.

Is the engine number lower than 10Y/Ta/H24577?

I should've said I hope its a 997. The car it was in is a Cooper. The bloke I got it off told me the engine was to....?? After having a proper look and a measure up it turned out to be a bit of a hottie. +.030 bore, Mahle pistons, 998 crank, ground .040 on B/E .020 on Mains (why would you bother unless you're trying to stroke it) Very well ported head etc etc. But still not a 997...!!! I got it for free, so wasn't to concerned at the time. Just proves you need to do your research. Thanks for the info re the early 1100 blocks.

Was it a 998 Cooper?

The 998 was a better engine, many of the 997 engines were swapped for them, parts easier to find etc. I'd say the undersize grind on the crank would be due to previous damage to the bearing surface. What cylinder head does it have? 12G202, 12G295..

Years ago (1968) I bored my 997 block to 68mm and put a new 1100 crank + rods in it.
IMO it's the same block casting as early 1098, just was a smaller bore to begin with.

Hi Doc,
Did you ever hear or know somebody boring out and fitting Hillman Imp Pistons. I think they didn't come to the top of the block so you would have shave a bit off the block and space the rockers for the push rods. At the time Imp Pistons were cheap and came with rings and grudge on pin and were 68mm.
Cheers,
Alan.

Yeah that is how I did it back then. I built 3 of em (1 Mini & 2 Sprites).
Block needed .148" off from memory, used with a 1098 crank..
Imp pistons are short, (so are GR's 68mm 1098 ones, IF you use them on a 998 crank like the one in my garage). :)

Imp pistons are NLA now. My bro' rebuilt his Imp 4 years ago, he had to settle for a re-ring job because good new pistons were unobtainium.
