I went to fit my new long magnetic sump plug but it swims around in the hole ?
Image
The original plug is 3/4" 10 UNC and the magnetic one is 5/8" 11 UNC.
Which one is the correct size.

The one that fits!

Someone has stripped the thread and tapped it bigger. 5/8 was original.

The old plug has a 6mm hole drilled down inside it.
I'm tempted to cut the shaft off the magnetic one and drill the hole a little bigger and drive the shaft of the magnetic one in and then refit the magnet to the end of it.
Does this sound feasible ?

Just make up some epoxy resin or something like that to glue the shaft/magnet into your plug.

Just try to keep it straight.

Or did you say that the old plugs hole is smaller then the shaft on the new plug? Doesn't look it in the picture but if so then just do as you mentioned.

Works a treat.

Mini_mad_mat
I don't trust epoxy. If it's not prepared/mixed perfectly the results can be poor.
I'd hate to have the magnet come loose and leap onto the gears

Yes, I think the "press fit" option is better.

Is a magnet really necessary. I'm only fitting one because I can and others do as well.

Magnet is a good idea. Press fit the one out of the new plug.

Why not use a magnet on the filter if you can't get one on the sump plug?

Good point.
Since putting a rare earth magnet on the spin-on filter, I get sfa debris on the sump plug one.

However I've not tried one on an old cartridge filter. Their filter can may be too thick to get a decent magnetic field through it. Need to trial fit a magnet on the bench, then throw some iron filings in there and have a look see at how it holds put.

How about putting it inside the filter? A disc with a hole the right size might work?

You could sit a small one inside on the bottom, no need for a hole in it. A 20mm one would do. It won't move.

What size magnet do people use on the spin on filters?

I have three 50mm (l) x 10mm (w) spaced equally.

Cheers

I use 2 x 25mm ones but a 20mm one is OK.
