Hi all I took my cooper s for a good 4 hour run today and it is running rich which I thought it was, so I want to put a new kit through the carbies and get the mixture right. I have been told I have 1 1/2 su carbs but I want to be sure before ordering the kit how can I tel what sort and size carbs i have and what sort of kits should I get, just gaskets and main jet or a complete rebuild kit and if so where from Cheers Glenn |

You can tell from the bolt pattern where they bolt onto the manifold (at least for HS type carbs, I'm not sure about the HIF series). Two bolts on each one in a vertical configuration = 1 1/4" Two bolts on each one in a diagonal configuration = 1 1/2" Four bolts in a square configuration = 1 3/4" Check out this link in the how to's for the gaskets which should clear up what I said above.: http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=82577. |

Another method is to measure the diameter of the carby inlet. All spares are available from Fabre Australia in Sydney, just phone them and they will help. If needed you can send them a photo of the carb and they can identify it for you. |

For example a 1-1/2" HS4 is only 35mm inlet (not 38.1= 1.5") but the outlet is 1.5". |

SU carbs are actually quite easy to tune once you know how, provided they are in good nick. It might be worth taking it somewhere that knows minis and asking them to give it a tune - you'll just pay for the labour, so it won't be expensive. They could also tell you if they need rebuilding. It won't hurt to get a rebuild kit of course, but it may be just fine as it is, and just needs a tune. |

If you have wear in the spindles, it'd be worth getting the complete rebuild kit and getting them rebushed. I got the full rebuild kit for mine from SU Midel (aka Fabre). http://www.sumidel.com/index.html |

Thanks again everyone for your help, I'm pulling carbs out and doing a rebuild and I want to clean the carbs up, what is best way to make them nice and clean ? |

I've seen some good info on here about parts cleaning, soaking the parts in degreaser diluted with water even a vinegar solution I think. One bloke even used the dish washer! If you use the search feature and use those words "parts, cleaning, carbys" loads of reading will come up. |

I've heard lemon juice works well for soaking carbs but I've not tried it. |

I used a dishwasher. Gets them really clean but turns them almost black. I would get them Soda blasted next time. |
