Post subject:  Cooper S Barn Find - 30 years hidden away and untouched!

Hi Guys,

I'm brand new to this site, although not entirely new to these awesome little cars. I've had a few Clubman Minis in the past and loved each and every one of them.

Last week I discovered and purchased a Mk1 Cooper-S that had been in storage for 30 years where it has been extremely well preserved and left without being interfered with. I am looking to embark on a complete restoration of the car however I am looking to learn more and find out more information before I determine the best way forward. The previous owner purchased the vehicle just a few years old and it's said to be a 1965 model.

The model is said to be a YKG2S2

The car chassis number stamped under the compliance plate reads 1741

The engine number is 9F/SA/Y41581

I have had several Cooper S owners and enthusiasts look over the car and all confirm it's a genuine Cooper S with all the correct, original and untouched markings of being "the real thing". What these people have not been able to confirm for me is the exact year of manufacture and exactly what I have been fortunate enough to get my hands on?

I will list photos of the car in the next few days also...

Thank you everyone in advance for your advice and input here :D

It would be a shame to even wash it with 30 years of dust on it that's if it was all dusty and not moved in 30 years

I started drooling as I was reading the title. Congrats and please upload some photos.

There is also a set of stampings on the radiator shroud that will have M2 above 06 and a 4 digit number about 500 less than the car number. eg 1240

It broke my heart washing away the dust! With everybody wanting to have a look and wipe their hands along the body the dust didn't last long anyway.

I also have a pile of BRAND NEW GENUINE parts that stacks up at around 8 cubic meters. This little Cooper and all the parts are a time capsule indeed...

For a bit of info - Here is a build thread of a car that is about the same build date as yours.

Did it have a different ID plate on the car?

It did have a different ID plate on the vehicle which was said to have been done for rego purposes back 30 years ago. He says he does have the original plate which will be supplied to me with old paperwork and other documentation.

This far the old fellow (around 70 years of age) has been an absolute gentleman and seemingly honest so I have no reason to question his story.

I've searched everywhere online and can't find anything to exactly ID the vehicle's build date etc...

Great pick-up. Anyone know what the brackets fitted to both front lights are? Seems to have a nut welded on the end? Also the seats and harnesses look interesting.
Cheers
