Hey guys!

Purchased a 73 mini with a 1098 (I think, eng prefix 1001) and I've noticed theres an oil leak around the oil pressure switch. It seems to be coming out between the switch and the block.

Is there a gasket? Can I just put some sealant on the thread? Or should I replace the switch?

What size spanner/socket fits over it?

Clean around the area with a bit of degreaser to see exactly where the leak is coming from , more than
likely coming from the threaded section of the switch , albeit they can leak from the switch itself .

They don't have a gasket, you can use some liquid sealent around the thread .

Thanks, mate. I can definitely see it weeping out from below the "head" where the spanner goes to tighten it. Will wack some goo on the thread

I'm pretty sure the thread is 1/8" NPT - national pipe taper. It shouldn't nead a gasket as the thread is tapered. If anything, some medium loctite or similar should seal any gaps in the thread / try some plumbers teflon tape to seal it up.

Looks like the switch is only $11. Might just be worth getti ng a new one

Nope the thread in the block is definitely 1/8 BSP, parallel. A 1/8 NPT one (very common aftermarket switch) will screw in a bit, but is prone to leak. The NPT thread is bigger, and 1 tpi different.

I'd try some sealant (NOT teflon tape!) but if still leaking, buy the right one.

The ones you get from Repco are the ones like I have that are 1/8 NPT not 1/8 BSP as that is where I got mine from to replace my old one that didn't earth out anymore.

A 1/8 BSP dienut is a handy thing to have.

The British car industry never standardised properly on threads in the 60s, a Mini hydraulic stoplight switch is 1/8 BSP. A Hillman Imp one (looks almost same but NLA) is 3/8 UNF, go figure. (so my 3/8 UNF dienut was handy for my bro' too!)
