Hi all

So I've currently got a single box maniflow side exit exhaust. It sounds great but it's just a little too modest for my liking. I'd really like to put something considerably louder on but still hold that classic a series rasp!

Any suggestions? I remember reading the lukeys were good, but can't find where I saw it. Am I best buying a mini one or get a custom muffler shop one done up?

I can't help you out with choosing a new one, but I might be interested in your maniflow one if you take it off..

I've got the twin box RC40 and it's a bit too quiet I think!

The trick is to fit muffler as far forward as possible, say a 18" hot dog about inline with handbrake.

I do use a Maniflow RCM system which is a similar concept. It sits in line around the rear floor.

Rear mufflers must make a difference to the decibels though right?

Hey guys this thread has been helpful for me thanks - also reading the threads in the links posted.

I'm having a supercharged 1275 built. The supercharger kit builder recommended a 2 1/4 " exhaust and he had a preferred muffler in s/steel that is no longer available. Given info learned just now, this (clicky) is a 2.25" version of the Lukey muffler discussed.

Has anyone any experience with this on an A series? I guess probably not...I was hoping on full stainless system but maybe this will manage the flow required and also provide a typical mini raspy sound. It's something I've been trying to solve.

Ideally I want it to sound quite traditional. I don't really want people to know it's anything but a period Mini. But obviously it needs to have adequate flow and adequate noise damping, so it's a bit of a balance.

Any thoughts? And sorry if it is a bit of a thread hijack - it looked like the thread had run its course and this was semi on topic

I don't know which muffler in particular you were referring to in your clicky as it just went to the website.

If I was you and wanting it to be stainless then I would consider a custom made muffler. To find the sound your after, have your engine pipe made up to the point you mount your muffler and then try different types until you find something your after. To get the edgy sound, I believe you need one that has an expansion chamber. That is one thing the Lukeys had to make that rasp.

A L2290 is a mild steel version of what I'm talking about in 2 1/4. The L132 has the same type of expansion chamber from memory but only available in 1 3/4 and there is a 2inch version but its not stainless.

You could try one of these:



Stainless steel Torana XU1 muffler. 2" central inlet, a pair if 1.5" outlets. Fits inside the rear subframe and has a real bark to it

I've got to assemble the whole car, then get it Dyno tuned to run for the first time. I am getting the exhaust mandrel bent in stainless so I might grab that L2290 and have them install that. Then I can get it tuned and decide whether I like the sound.

Two final questions;
When you say expansion chamber, do you mean within the rear muffler? Just trying to figure out what I'd ask for if I go the custom route.

And should I be running a cat? It will be running 98. The shell is a 1968.

I run the 2" version of that on my 1360. It was a little noisy, about the same as original S. I put a hotdog in the tunnel to make it quieter, as the 45 Dellorto carby makes enough noise on its own.

Okay, well original Cooper S level would be acceptable. Since I'm going up a size I think I'll go the hotdog/resonator too to make it a bit quieter.

I wouldn't bother running a cat but that's just me.

Reversible means that it doesn't matter which end of the muffler is the inlet (offset end or centre end). The L132 has an inlet and an outlet.

Expansion chamber is an internal opening in the muffler. So the pipe goes straight in, enters the chamber and leaves through another pipe.
