Hi all

Just noticed a cooper s for sale on carsales.com.au (search Morris Mini Cooper)

When I checked the photos of the id plate and engine number it matched the cooper s mk 1 register.
The register says however that the engine number may not be correct however it may well be correct!
Well that's what the photos say

Alot of the data on the register has been compiled from people volunteering the information. I am not sure what checks and ballances are carried out to verify it is correct. I personally believe this plate has a few problems. It is entirely hand stamped from a blank plate, the engine number is a few thousand less than others built around the same time and the 2 colours quoted are the around the wrong way compared to the vehicle. Maybe the car had to go back under warranty for an engine replacement and a new hand stamped ID plate was created. Although you would expect a later engine to be reissued. Maybe the colours were changed from red over white to white over red or the person restamping it made a mistake.

Plate looks dodgy , should have small 'a' in engine number if factory restamp and engine block has wrong font ,has been restamped

Just had a quick look, it's a mk1 binnacle with mk2 speedo. Block is stamped too close to the edge. Tellem he's dreamin.
Looks like a nice car but not for that money.

Besides the incorrect stamping, other tell tale signs that it's a reproduction ID plate include the missing full stops after "CORRESPONDENCE MUST QUOTE THESE NUMBERS" and "GUARANTEE CEASES ON REMOVAL OF THIS PLATE". Also the silver boarder around the edge of the plate is too thick.

If it is a Cooper S block, why is the PCV coming off the clutch cover - and where does the hose go to if not to the carbs, which also seem to have an odd fuel supply link.
