Hi Everyone,

My apologies for this question, I know that it has been gone through many many times already however I still cant seem to find the answer I'm looking for.

I have a 1965 round nose (deluxe) and would like to install retractable seat-belts for the driver seat and front passenger. This car may require a registration check (in SA), So I was wondering what the best method (ie. legally and safety) is to attach the seat-belts.

I have seen the retractor mechanism installed onto the rear seat pocket before (from the front), with a 5x5cm metal disc behind it (attached to the nut), however I have heard that this as a poor method? What method is the best (please note the car has already been painted).

Secondly, are there any legal restrictions regarding having the electric fuel pump located either inside the boot itself or underneath the car? I have seen both types before, but was unsure of the legality and safety or each??

My apologies for asking this question again,

Thanks for all your help
Richard

Re - The fuel pump. I had a look a few months ago and couldn't find anything to say a fuel pump cannot be in the boot. My car had it in the boot when I bought it but it was very smelly. The hoses needed replacement and while I was at it I moved it to under the car. Mine had wires and hoses going everywhere for stuff to get tangled up with. Also remember that the boot area is not sealed from the cabin.

I have retractable belts in front, both reel & belt attached to std lower mount. Car is a `70 Matic (same shall as a Mini K).
I had to drill another mounting hole in the reel's bracket, closer to the reel. To stop the reel fouling the door pocket.
Working fine.

Belts are Klippan.

Hi gtogreen1969, thanks for that. I couldn't see any rules stating that it was not allowed, but was unsure if there were any loopholes they could get me on..

drmini in aust, I'm not quite sure how yours are attached near the door itself. It looks like it is attached onto the sill region on the interior part? If so, how did you bolt it on (ie the nut would be inside the sill?)

All minis have a nut welded in the sill of that spot.

Underneath was standard for all minis fitted with an electric pump. It works very well and is quite safe down there as it is up in the subframe.

Definitely under the car would be best. In the boot it just takes up space and it likely to be damaged. Some BMC cars did have them in the boot, we had a Morris Oxford and that had the pump in the boot. Was well out of the way of the cargo but you still needed to be careful of it when loading the boot.

Regarding the belts I fitted Klippan retractables to my car and got a engineer to pass it when I re registered the car in NSW. I found the reel cleared the door pocket ok, you just need to angle the other bracket forward to clear the door pocket.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
I was able to locate the thread on the sill (I had covered it whilst painting and then forgot that it was there!).

This may sound a little stupid, but where does everyone mount the third seatbelt mount? ie. the retractor mechanism is mounted to the sill panel, the 'middle mount (along the length of the seatbelt itself), but I'm not sure where the final mount is attached...

I thought about attaching it to the same mount on the sill as the retractor mechanism, but this would require a twist in the seatbelt (which I thought was not allowed?)...

Thanks in advance
Richard

I put them on the same bolt, below the door, see my pic. Both the reel and the end of the belt. There is a slight angle on the belt bracket but it's passed inspection every year.

Does anyone find the underneath mounting too near the exhaust? Mine had side exit ( not sure of brand through but not rc40) and i chose to wrap some heat shield around the pump... (lowest point so if leaking fuel could drip at that point and that was where my fuel filter was)

I've never had a problem with pumps under there (I'm running a 2" turbo [side exhaust] muffler). But if putting a filter there, I'd use a Falcodore or similar, steel can one. Too hot for a Ryco plastic, and I'd never fit a glass Purolator one down there. Could get broken.

I know in theory you're not supposed to but my facet fuel pump is bolted to the bulkhead next to the windscreen washer bottle. A neat fit and had no issues at all..

My mate's Clubby van has it up there, like some other British cars it sometimes suffers from vapour lock in hot weather when parked.
We'll relocate it to down below when we get a round tuit. :)

Hi Doc,

I've just done 2 years in the tropics (Indonesia, car arrives back in Melbourne tomorrow, yay!) and didn't experience vapour lock. To be honest couldn't be bothered with fiddling around under the rear subframe so just installed the pump where the previous owner had fitted an SU type pump. Guess I'll leave it there..
