Post subject:  Gearbox Question

I'm restoring an early 850 (car number 47640-1962 I think) and it has a 22A363 magic wand gearbox with cone-synchro gears.
The car has done less than 40K Miles and the box appears to have been rebuilt at some stage and is in great shape with no wear on the gears.
The gearbox had no problems when I drove it home but I'm concerned about continuing to use it as I've read they have problems slipping out of gear once the cones wear. Half of me wants to fit a later gearbox to "save" this one before it wears out and cannot be rebuilt but the other half likes the idea of keeping everything original. I also really don't intend on doing many miles in the car once it's rebuilt.
Does anyone know how long the brass cones last before this starts to become a problem?

You can fit an early seventies 4 Synchro box which also had the Magic wand. These boxes came out in 71 in poverty pack cars and some Vans.

I had a 22G1128 4 synchro box with a magic wand shifter in my "64 van when I first bought it.
I sold the shifter and mechanism and converted the gearbox to a remote shift when I restored the van.
I should have kept the magic wand mechanism as i have another 4 synchro remote shift box that I could use in the 850 :( .
If anyone has the magic wand shifter and parts to fit onto a 4-synchro box-I'd be interested in taking them off your hands!

You can use an 850 diff housing & shifter on a 22G1128 box. Just check diff bearing alignment.

Thanks Doc, I forgot about that option.
I recall that there was some discussion recently on the forum about this-I'll see if I can find it.
Cheers
Dave

There's a thread here. I'm planning on doing a similar thing to mine

I've done that on our woody (1100 + 4 synchro)
Works fine

Thanks Gentlemen

That was the build I did to make my 850 interior look a bit more original.
I haven't fitted that gearbox yet. Another job on the list.
The conversion is pretty straight forward.
