Post subject:  Headlights

Hi people,

I need to get some new headlights (halogen) for my car. What do you recommend, place to buy, approx price etc.

Thanks

Mikal

I have had Wipac Quadoptic H4s in my car for nearly 20 years. Unlike Hella and some others the glass is curved not flat, so they don't look `wrong'.
I bought them in from Minispares UK, but you can get them here now for around $75 a pair, from Karcraft. Some other places charge much more for these. Part number for this Quadoptic kit (2 lamps) is S4698B.

Tip:
Fit headlamp relays, this takes load off your switchgear and means more Volts get to the lamps. = brighter.

Any 7" non sealed beam light will fit. I suppose there may be light units that don't take H4 bulbs (standard halogen headlight (dipable twin filament) but I've not seen any. The only other issue is whether the lamp bowl has a fitting for the side light bulb. If not, you can get a twin filament (side light/indicator) setup for the standard Mini indicator unit.

I used to use some old (Lucas) light units I found on an old LandRover at the local wreckers.... with modern high powered bulbs.

Older units can be advantage as the bowls are usually metal so can take higher power (hotter) bulbs. Some modern units are plastic :(

Cheers, Ian

I have had Hella semi-sealed H4s on one mini for about 40 years (replaced once!). Being flat they do look slightly odd but give good light spread; glass yellows slightly over time. Many local suppliers of Hella
Other mini has had Cibie semi-sealed H4s for many years. Bought overseas. Not sure about local suppliers. Great spread of light and long range high beam. Curved lens (looks standard); glass very clear.
Use relays, as per drmini.
Consider fitting internal parking lights to the main headlight shells and away from the beehive, so that the beehive light can be made orange and be only used for turn indicators. Other motorists can't see white blinkers on a mini when the parking light is also on at night. Everyone expects to see orange blinkers front and rear.

I've got some Cibies on mine, but they have flat lenses and don't look "right". They have H4 headlights and T10 wedge parking lights.

I've got mine set up like Bill suggests: parker lights inside the glass lense and the indicators only in amber lenses below. E.g. with parkers on:

I sell Pairs of Autopal brand 7" H4 Headlights which have convex glass of course with built in Parker bulb holder, complete with H4 12V 60/55 Watt globes and the parker bulbs posted free to anywhere in Australia for $75.00. I suggest also fitting and wiring headlight relays when upgrading headlights so the switches don't carry unnecessary load. This results and much better lights even when you do not change the headlights.
