1. There are 2 canister diameters, make sure you use the right filter element and square O-ring rubber seal to suit.
2. Scrape the old rubber seal out, replace.
3. There is a seal washer under the element plate, make sure you have it. The flat washer goes under that, then the spring.
And another seal ring under the canister body.
Amazing how often you find bits missing in there when you buy old cars...!

I usually just try to make sure everything is clean when I pull it all apart and then put a thin smear of oil on the seals when I reassemble.

Do you replace all of the little o-rings each time? Last time I bought a Ryco filter they were cheaping out and not supplying all the necessary gaskets in their oil filters. I buy a different brand that does supply the little o-rings and I think that helps.

Yep i have dramas with the new square o ring rubber holding in place, it seems to be a little to large. Im using the filter supplied from karcraft and use the the thickest rubber supplied. I will check the part number for the filter i have when i get home, hopefully its the right one, motor btw is a S mk2. I might try a Ryco brand and see if its any better.

Rubbers now are probably the finest Chinese quality that yuan can buy.
If you need another canister assembly, I have a few here. I run spin-ons, less hassle when oil change is due.

I usually put a smear of grease on the o ring to hold it in the groove on the filter head they are a pain to get on but

Maybe your over tightening the filter and pinching the o ring that's happen to me once or twice

Mine was missing the spring inside on the first oil change

Make sure that the seal ring housing where the square sealing ring fits is completely free of any old and hardened bits of rubber from the old ring. I have seen plenty that were not with resulting leaks
Ive even seen ones with 2 seal rings in the groove where the old one wasn't removed leading to leaks

They are designed in such a way that they can't leak. The seal sits in a groove, the canister fits in the groove behind the seal, it can't miss and they handle extremely high pressures without leaking.
As long as everything is undamaged by ham fisted mechanics it is pretty much foolproof.
