I want to install a thermo fan and I was hoping to get some advice from anyone whos done this before. I've looked at the Kenlowie setup thats available from minisport.com and was wondering if there is an equivalent and cheaper system that can be recommended. Also how difficult is installation? I do pretty much all the work on the mini myself and will probably attempt to do this myself as well. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. |

Hi - I am 'fettling' (my word - my wife uses 'f$@t-a*sing around with) my new 1380 track day motor (Dave Anton built , A+ block, forged 11.5:1 pistons, steel capped bottom end, VP8SP cam, 1.5 rollers, SH belt drive, Pederson headers, 123Tune, 48 DCOSP on Swiftune SC/CR 4 synch/3.7 ATB)) and decided to go with a leccy fan, partly cos my 4-blade woulx't fit, but also for faster warmup, better cooling at low speed (its a road car mainly), better acceleration and being able to set it to cool the engine after switch off, reducing potential heat soak/vapour lock issues. In addition, the engine is much quieter, and I'm told the fan will use less power than the belt driven fashion. So far, I've had the engine running up to full song in an aluminium shed at 40° C, and the fan seems able to hold it at about 86°. I bought the fam and thermal switch from supercheap for about $150. The 12 inch model fits neatly on the outside of the radiator slots under the wing and doesn't foul anything. It might be possible to fit a small model (10 inches) on the inside, but really it's easier to put outside, and no cutting is required. I don't recommend you remove the bars of the radiator aperture, is that panel has an important role in triangulating the front subframe, and extra reinforcing may be needed. Also possible to make up some additional aperture shaping to reduce spillover of air and get full value. Haven't tried it in the real world yet but will let you know as soon as. I also have installed a 10 inch fan from super cheap auto and mounted it nicely inside. Works a treat along side my belt driven fan in a push/pull configuration.

I went down to the local car breakers and got a small fan from a Toyota and mounted it up on the inner wing and used this Minispares fan controller to operate it.Just make sure the fan is pulling air out instead of pushing it in. http://minispares.com/product/Classic/C ... o%20search |
