Hi everyone, Just looking through the engine and although the primary gear doesnt seam to have any play on the crank, on the outer side where the primary gear makes contact with the primary gear seal (about where the oil holes are) it is not flat, it s concave, when I run my finger across it it is definately not flat, it is meant to be? Just wondering if i should replace or not. Cheers, Steve |

![]() ![]() Here are a couple of photos, when I look at primary gears online it looks like mine is missing something on the outside near the oil holes? Also my casing is chewed a little as seen, will this be an issue? Cheers, Steve |

That's NBG, go find a less worn one. 998/1098 ones are common. Yours is missing the slinger too (if it had one). |

Cheers, steve You will need thicker thrust washers, assemble the cover to the gearbox BEFORE you bolt the motor on, set idler gear endfloat around .004" - .006". Note you can get gaskets in various thickness, I've seen some down to .022" thick. Common ones are .033" approx. If you can't get thick enough washers, get a machine shop to mill the gasket face down by the amount of wear step at the thrust washer boss measureed with a depth micrometer or vernier caliper. You can go .005 or so more, thin thrust washers are easier to find than thickest ones. EDITED after checking a housing. |

looking around all the usual sites and no one tends to have new idler thrust washers, do they not make these any more? Cheers, Steve |

Not easy to find new but I have ALL the local Mini shop's stock of s/h ones. Let me know what you need. Thickest I have are .136" I think. I can surface grind down to whatever you need. |

I would be checking that you have both the dowels in the "Block to box" & the correct dowels for the "primary case to gearbox" looks like the "primary case" doesn`t line up correctly with the crank center line to me i`d be looking carefully at all those alignment & centering issues to be honest going by the offset shown with the gouging in the primary case from attempting to remove the primary gear |

I agree with Matt, something is not quite right in the alignment. |

Could it be anything to do with idler bearings? Both getting replaced as were in poor shape. |

I checked block, pins are non existant or nt long enough as is one on the housing. Are these still available ( name of item)? How hard to put in/ take out? Cheers, Steve |

Matt would have some, new or s/h. Both dowels are in the gearbox, not the block. |
