I'm planning on hooking up the warning light switch on my 1998 Rover Mini (the switch with an exclamation mark) to my garage door opener, so I can just push this button on the dash to open/close the garage door. At present when I push this switch it lights up, as well as lighting up when the handbrake is on. Going through my Japanese owner's manual it says something about this being a check light for something to do with the breaks maybe (my Japanese is only good enough to read some of it), what is this for? I suspect it may be a low brake fluid level warning, but my level seems to be ok.

I need to know as if there will be times that I push this button and it doesn't light up then it will change how I have to wire up the garage door opener to it.

From memory that switch is a test button for brake failure light. If you disconnect it it will not hurt anything it will mean that you can not test your brake fail warning light. No big deal you will know when you brakes fail any way. lol.

Yep, that switch was a bit of joke all through mini production- because at the fluid level in the reservoir that it actually triggers the light you've probably already crashed!
The actual switch part is there only to test that the light works- so you could set the switch to be your door opener.......you'll know if the light doesnt work when you apply the hand brake.

You can use it to run the door opener and test the light, there is no need to disconnect it.

i have to disagree as, if everything works ok, the light will come on if the fluid level drops just below minimum. and that doesn't mean you can no longer use the brake, it still works ok.
sometimes it can tell you that the brake pads are well-worn and not that you have a leak somewhere. don't ask how i know

Thanks guys, this turned out to be a lot easier than I thought it would be. Since there's a different wire for the light (it's not inline with the switch) it was just a case of connecting the two switch pins to the switch on the garage remote, and then hiding that away...
