i was wondering if there were some common things that cause battries to go flat apart from a sick alternator
its only a small battery and seems to loose charge if not driven for 3 days or so

When Scotty had similar problem it was a fault with the earth strap.

OK a few clues...

It has a new battery. Why did it need a new one? Did the old battery have the same problem?

No stereo. Does it have any other non standard electrical items? Like a clock or a tacho or a row of neons under it or driving lights.

Does it go flat if you disconect the battery?

Do you have a multimeter?

^ ditto to both the above..

There are two earth straps..one on your -ve battery terminal, make sure that's clean and ALSO where the lead attaches to the boot floor, unbolt it and clean it up there as well...

At the front there is an earth strap that should be bolted to the body...
