Can someone please help. When a car was sprayed at the factory, did the doors have the hinges fixed with gaskets then sprayed? Or sprayed separately then fitted? Cheers jason |

The shell was all panels fitted |

Bodies had the doors, boot and bonnet attached and wired shut with soft welding wire before going through the Rotodip, then on to the primer paint dip and finally the paint shop for a baked enamel finishing coat. Others may have a different opinion.That is what I did when my car was repainted recently. That was also the way the painters wanted to do it. An interesting thing appeared during the dis-assembly of the car. Upon removal of the number plate flap hinges, one had virgin steel behind the hinge and the other had surface rust, indicating that one was installed before painting, and the other afterwards. |

When I finally get around to having mine painted, everything that opens and closes will be painted separately, Doors, Bonnet, Boot, hinges, bonnet catch etc...etc... lloks much cleaner this way. Completely agree with Winabbey. |

It all depends on what paint / color your going for if a solid color i would have it apart as you will get better coverage. but if metallic/ pearl or some of the newer light colors panels painted at different angles will have a different look to them and and even though you mix your paint well there is always a slight variance pot to pot. so you will paint your shell using a few pots all good then move to panels the heavier particles have settled ever so slightly in the tin giving a different appearance |

Cheers again jason Mate all good to follow the factory, but remember what they did was for efficiency, not best practice. If you are going to paint them fitted why not blow some paint over the body where the hinges fit up, and then fit the doors for final paint. Will still give you that legitimate crap finish BMC strived for but at least you have a chance your car won't have rust bubbling out from behind your hinges in a couple of years time. At the same time I would blow a bit of paint around the inside of the door. Personally I choose to paint them separately. Gives you the opportunity to paint evenly and thoroughly under the doors themselves and particularly on the doors leading edge. Painting them with the doors on you just can't get the paint to lay evenly, which is why so many original doors have runs or conversely bugger all paint at the forward panel where the hinge retaining screws go. Same goes for under the number plate flap. Try covering that with colour with it attached. When restoring a car you need to make some decisions on authenticity vs finish. The engines for example were painted with virtually everything attached. Oil filler cap, inlet manifold, starter, generator, radiator bracket, oil pressure line etc. The colour was just oversprayed onto the manifold and looks crap (I have a colour photo of an original S engine) To restore it like this would be correct but look terrible and have you laughed at at any concourse event in the country. These days most properly restored cars, and thats my cars included are far better than the factory ever produced. Its a decision you need to make for yourself. Doing it CORRECTLY you will be forever justifying why the end product looks like a crap job. |

I just paint the hinges and areas they fit to, fit doors then paint whole car. This puts paint behind them and still makes it look original. I don't do concourse but if I did, I'd rather loose points for non originality than have it look shabby. I watch that dream car garage show and when they do concourse cars they're perfect, right down to over spray, check marks and sign offs. A lot of research goes into a really good car. |
