I would expect it was 78bhp. But a guaranteed 78bhp and not a sales brochure 78bhp.

What was the power output for a police cooper s I know the " ordinary " s is 78bhp but given the they had to achieve 100mph and they had a better cam , carbys etc etc ...... |

most "S"`s were lucky to have 70hp at the engine Police spec would be slightly more but every engine was different to a slight degree Back in the day-->sometimes an "S" would come in here for service (not long after being sold brand new) & was way quicker than the average people used to call them "Freak engines" but in my opinion those very few were probably more close-to the way they were "Meant" to be,,, closer to the "Blue-print" than the average one |

They did 106mph downhill, the nice policeman told me when I stopped for him after a long pursuit.  That was in 1969, probably before they got the twin HS4s. (Edit) I've been good ever since.

Weren't standard 1275 (Ss) quoted at 75hp??? Back in the 40/50s Rolls Royce hot tested every engine (on coal gas). Sub specification engines were sent back to assembly, disassembled and parts put back into the assembly line. Mildy optimal engines were sent to Bentley. The few super-optimal examples that turned up were disassembled and parts put back into the assembly line. I doubt BMC were so anal.... Cheers, Ian |

75HP, 78HP, depends what book you read. GR told me he has never seen 75 from a bog stock S on his engine dyno. |

All Mark 1 Cooper S's and all MK II Cooper S's up to car #2371 were stock standard showroom models from a performance viewpoint. The first car with performance improvements (SPO41 - Police Specification) was car #2372. |

The carbs alone are a big release of potential. I love my stock spec engines, but a police spec with the slight mods really add some bite to the Cooper S bark. |

The CAMS (FIA) Production Certificate (homologation form) for the Mini Clubman GT lists the following information: Max. engine output 78 DIN HP at 5,800 rpm. Max torque 80 lb/ft at 3,000 rpm. Max speed of car 156 kmh (97 mph). The subsequent Production Certificate for the SPO28 Clubman GT (police specification) is one page. It only shows variations to the original specification and nothing in the Performance section, unfortunately. Greg Coates has a race SPO41 MK II S. He may have some comparative performance data versus a standard power plant. |

Sorry no data to prove. To make matters worse Hp figures are irrelevant. Quoting a Hp figure will only be relevant to that particular dyno, throw it on another dyno and it will invariably read something different. Of interest though, when I spoke to John Cotter (BMC works dept) he claimed all the works built production cars produced between 91 and 93 Hp on their engine dyno and did state that a standard one produced around 75. He was pretty adamant about the figures. Doesn't help with your query but does show you can get more from less with a bit of fettling. I previously owned a Tamarisk Green SPO41 that was in concourse original condition. Comparing to my father's 2 owner Mk2 S, the SPO41 was definitely more lively on the road, so whatever the Hp gain from the SPO41 was, it was definitely noticeable. |
