Post subject: | Fitting manual rod change to minimatic |
Hi all, In case anyone does not know I am converting a minimatic to manual rod change meaning of course making holes in the floor. I would imagine the easiest way to do this is with the gearbox in situ but I would rather not leave it til then as I would like it to be painted after this. I guess to do this I need a template showing the cutout/holes which is accurate. Has anyone had success doing it this way, or do the holes need to be 'spot on' and I should wait til after the gearbox is fitted? Thanks Jon |

Hi Jon, The clubman floor pan from which the typical rod change gear box comes from has a larger tunnel with another pressed section for the bracket mounting for the gear change and mount compared to Aussie Morris Mini's. I suspect this will also apply to the Minimatic. Thus you will need to do some work on the bracket to make the gear change fit, and I think the gearchange will sit a little lower (a little less ground clearance). When I have fitted rod change gearbox's to Aussie Morris minis I have also cut and shut the floor and fitted the clubman tunnel in. Bit of work but then I use all standard parts once the floor is done. |

When we owned Barney the pretend S with a 67 deluxe shell, the PO had fitted a 1098 & rodchange to it. It worked fine but we swapped a 1293A+ and Mini K box in coz I dislike a rodchange's lack of location against torque. But the rodchange cleared the floor OK. |

Hi, well the floor is rusty and it may be worthwhile to replacing this with the leyland version. I will think about this one..... Thanks |

So I have a 850 shell would a rod change fit in this if I make a bracket for the back have been told it will hit the floor or put the rod change at a funny angle and cause a oil leak |

Plenty of early floor cars running with a rodchange box these days. |
