Post subject:  Steering Rack Overhaul

I am overhauling the old Mini steering rack.
How do people undo the tie rod ball housing nut and lock nut on either end of the rack?
I find the main ball housing is too hard for the stilsons to bight into and grip.
I managed to get it all apart, but looking for something a bit more professional to put it back together.
From memory there used to be a pair of special C spanners - are these still available?
Any ideas or hints?
Thanks

I made a big C spanner from a half bush, a solid dowel pin and a handle welded on. But if you only have 1 rack to do, grind 2 flats on the ball housing nut.

I made my own C spanners but had trouble stopping the pin from breaking off.
T&E Tools make a range of C spanners, "available from good auto shops everywhere".

Thanks Guys,
I found the roller from the gearbox outrigger bearing was the correct size for the pin.
Then used a shifter - worked well.
