There are a second type as well from memory. I haven't an image, but they differ slightly.

Hey Mick. The one on the right looks different. Is that one of the after market ebay ones? The hole in the top is larger and the wings are at a steeper angle.

Yes, spot on. The one on the right is/was a repro being made in the UK. I am unsure if the fellow is still making them, but I got a pair to compare as they weren't terribly expensive.

Top to bottom, repro, repro, cooper S wingnut, slightly different (later? UK??) cooper s wingnut.
The two repros are different lengths deliberately. One was aimed at the thinner (later Aus/UK) air twin SU filter housing, and the longer for the thicker (early Aus/UK) type.

I have 2 spare wingnuts but want to keep them just in case I strip mine or if the ones on my car get stolen. I had a supplier in the UK about 10 years ago and bought 5 sets. I will see if I can track some more down again.

You could use this one. It will need cutting down but I am not sure how deep the thread goes.

You can cut them short and although the thread doesn't run down, they take a 1/4 UNC tap pretty easily. I have seen the second type often enough in the long shank, but never these ones.

I was looking around for wingnuts for sale and I couldn't believe the price of the aftermarket wingnuts on ebay.

I can't believe nobody has bothered to churn them out on a CNC from alloy billet.
Get `em the right shape & finish, make a fortune.

I was visiting a man a few months ago who had several air boxes that he had acquired over a lot of years. While trying to buy one off him I was watching as they were moved around and noticed that there seemed to be a majority of the type on the right. One box had one of the left type. IMO the one on the right seems to be the correct style as it is easier to loosen/tighten, the one on the left is very close to the lid and is hard to grip.

The Cooper S ones (far left) have sharper corners and edges than the usual ones. They are also slightly thinner in diameter.. Does anyone want it measured out?

I'm chasing another one to make a pair for my set
